4 wheel drive issue
When I was moving my dad's Jeep the other night, I was having trouble shifting in/out of 4 wheel drive. It would go into 4hi and then be difficult to get back to 2hi. I could not get into 4lo--the shifter would go past N but it never felt like it engaged 4lo--I think it was running 4hi at that time. His setup is 2002 sport with auto trans. Any thoughts?

Were you moving 1-3MPH when you tried to shift to 4wd?

It says in the manual to be moving 2-3 MPH when shifting into 4wd so the gears can match up properly. That should help

Check your linkage...I don't think this situation has anything to do with whether you're moving or stopped. The issue with being rolling usually only occurs when shifting into 4LO and even then, not all Jeeps have issues. Some will shift just fine stopped (such as mine).

Get under there and make sure nothing is bound up...make sure it's adjusted properly and the adjuster isn't slipping on the rod...and then lubricate the hell out of all moving components and work them a bit to get the lubricant worked in there. See if that helps.

Yea do what he says. I just say make sure you are moving because mine WONT shift in or out of 4wd if im not moving.

But should I also be moving when shifting into 4lo.

Yes and no...some people can do it while stopped and the gears will mesh just fine. Other's can''ll just grind and won't pop in. If yours grinds, you should be rolling VERY VERY no more than about 3mph. Just enough for the gears to be moving a little bit and when they're positioned right, they'll pop right in as you're pulling the handle up. They say you should also be in neutral when shifting into 4LO with an auto I dunno how you would do that while slowly rolling...I guess, pop it into neutral and when it slows to a crawl, yank the handle? With my 5 speed, I figured I'd just clutch it while doing the shift. Never really thought about that part since mine always engages flawlessly while stopped.
