new keys

this may be a dumb question, but I went to walmart today to get some extra keys, due to the fact that when I bought my 2009 wrangler yesterday, it came w/ only ONE key.
I quickly found out that the new ones woudn't start the jeep. ANyone want to tell me why?

It's an X.. w/ NO frills,, no power,, not keyless entry,, nada! But a little red light came on ,, the engine started and quickly died.

HELLLLLLLLLLLP!!!!!

My '99 has a factory immobilizer... So I well invasion yours does...

Get you key programmed

I don't know if the JK's are color coded like the TJ's...but if the normal key is a gray key, it has a chip in it. You need to either buy blank keys with that chip in it and have them cut for your Jeep...and then take them to be programmed to your Jeep. Or just pay the dealership price to have them cut and program a new key for you.

I would go back to the dealer you bought it from and tell them you need another key...if you prod enough, you could probably convince them to give you one free of charge since you just purchased the Jeep from them. You could lie and say the salesman promised you a second key...or just be honest and say you're kind of irked that you didn't get two keys since most vehicles include a spare key either to keep handy in case you lock yourself out or for a significant other to keep on their key ring. Your Walmart keys are useless...pitch em.

Even if your Jeep has no pwer locks, it still has a security feature. Your key has a transponder chip that is picked up at the steering wheel. If a non transponder key is used, the Jeep will start, but die just as you have noticed. I'd go to the dealer and ask for a second key. If they charge you, prepare to pay around 200 bucks for it.

I wouldn't toss the walmart key. They can be used if you accidently lock your keys in the Jeep. Hide them somewhere on the outside/engine bay.

Never thought of that...guess that's what happens when you get used to never locking your doors. :whistling:

All Wranglers (even the most basic) since 2007 use a transponder chip ignition key. This prevents the engine from running for more than a few seconds if a non-chip key is used.

Transponder chip keys are very expensive at auto dealers. Usually $75 or more for each key at most dealers.

Inexpensive blank, non-cut, transponder chip keys can be ordered at many places and you can easily, self-program them with directions in your owner's manual. You must have two working chip keys to program additional keys. You will need to have the blank key cut at your local hardware store or locksmith. Usually this costs just a couple of dollars.

Just google: "jeep transponder chip ignition key" and you will get lots or results.

If you don't have an owner's manual, you can download them here for free:

My Jeep: Jeep Owners Service Manuals - 4x4 SUVs, Sports Utility Vehicles, Off Road

Here is a good place to get inexpensive transponder keys:

Now that you have two working transponder keys, you should get a third transponder key, just in case you loose one.

As long as you have 2 working transponder keys, you can self-program additional keys for free, per instructions in your owner's manual. You won't have to pay ridiculously high prices for programming.

Just google:

Jeep Wrangler transponder chip keys

and you will get lots of results.

I had to get one from the dealer after purchasing my 08. Ouch! Bought one and then I got 3 keys from Ikeyless for $18 each, had them cut by my local locksmith for $5 total and then programmed them myself. I now have 5 working keys. Hopefully I'll never have to purchase another key from the dealer.

Jag1948 02-13-2012 12:34 PM

Can't wait to try that!!
