Pensacola FL 4-wheelin' places

For those of you in Lower Alabama, like Mobile Daphne Foley area, and Pensacola FL. I found some mild wheeling places just N.E. of Rosinton, AL. & west of Cantonement FL, near the stateline on hwy 112/184, one is the Perdido Water management area just before the state-line bridge in Florida off to the left. Both are open to the public, just stay on the trails.

The other is also on hwy 112 in Alabama just further down (N.E. of Rosinton,AL), it's on River Rd between Tower Rd and hwy 87. You can check it out on Mapquest with the satilite veiw. pm me if you want directions

Hey, I recently went back to the Perdido water management area and went down all the trails, there's not much to it, it was ok after a good rain, but after it dried out, and I found that the trails close b4 you can get close to the river.

The other place off River Road is much better, and has 7 different areas that I found, where you can get down to the river, with some nice sand bars. go down there after a good rain, it will make things interesting. Some trails are marked with Orange signs- those are not meant for vehicals. There are several other trails down in there, some are sand and mud and some wooden bridges crossing creeks. and there are some steep inclines going down into the river access areas. Here's the directions- I copied/pasted from another thread that I posted.

There's 2 places along the Alabama hwy 112/Florida hwy184- it's the same road it's just called different #'s in either state. go to Mapquest.com type in Cantonment Florida, you'll see that Hwy 184 in a rectangular box it runs through Cantonement going east/west.

Get up there anyway you want. On hwy 184 there's the state line bridge going west in Florida. Just b4 the bridge on the left you'll see a tall narrow sign stating "Perdido Water Mngmt area" then the other place is on the same hwy going west but when you cross the river into Alabama, the Hwy turns into 112, zoom the mapquest map in till you see Champion paper rd, and Moreno LN on the Lt then you'll see "River Rd" (blue street sign) on your Rt (turn there), there's a big metal gate that you drive through.

Cool, thanks man. I'll be checking it out. Any suggestion for what to stay away from without a winch or mud tires

You can also check out US Truck 17 in Loxley. It's called Truck Trails and gets pretty muddy and rutty. I've done some decent flexing and sinking out there.

Is that the pay park next to Styx river, or the Truck Route Rd, north of it?

When I first went out there by myself, (I have 33x12.50x15 Goodyear Duratracs, but I don't have a winch.) I checked each mud hole with a long stick to see how deep it was and to find the best path throught it, it was alittle time consuming- but I didn't get stuck anywhere.

There's not really any massive mud holes, just areas were the rain water collects on the trail or where a creek crosses the trails. I don't know how street tires do in the sand, but you should use 4wd while driving through the sifty stuff. I went down there, showing other Jeepers the trails, and a guy had mud tires on and tried the sifty sand with out 4wd and got stuck, he got pulled out by someone with a winch.

I'd be happy to show you the trails that I've already explored, and I'm wanting to exlpore some other trails close to that area too. make sure your tank is full, if you have a gps bring it. it will make finding your favorite spot again, alot easier.

It's the old truck route north of Styx river. Eglin AFB has a trail, you have to buy a pass, but it's supposedly good. I live in Destin now, I'd like to try it soon.

The old truck route 17 doesn't go all the way through anymore, the wooden bridges have been dissmantled. I went & tried the trail out about a month ago.

I've been wondering about the trails on Eglin Range around hwy 87 and hwy 85, I used to live in Crestview, & I have been on the Range trails near Crestview, when I was stationed at Eglin. It's been 12 years since then though. Supposedly there's camping allowed (with permit) while down on the trails.

Going trail riding today out near Perdido River, if anyone's interested, let me know. Can meet up at the Oasis Truckstop.

Welcome! What part of the 'area' are you in? Also, if you're talking about that Rubicon, It's not a car- It's a Jeep:punk:

The River Road area is pretty good for that, you can follow the directions above, or on my next outing I'll let you know, and you can go out there when I do.

1_sick_Rubicon 07-15-2012 01:52 AM

i would much rather tag along with you, if you dont mind that. I may be tempted to try and find this place tomorrow weather depending. Just let me know when you plan on going out.

TJNewbie 07-15-2012 08:46 AM

That would be cool! I usually go every other weekend (when the wife works). next weekend will plan on it, just checked the extended weather outlook, it 'says' it should be clear on Fri-Sat, maybe we can get a few others to tag along too.

Kilcrease 07-15-2012 03:11 PM

I'm game for this trail ride, just give a time and place to meet.

1_sick_Rubicon 07-15-2012 08:59 PM

Im game we can shoot for ether of those days, but i would prefer Sat. The more the better. Have you been out to Eglin? I hear that's also a good place to hit up.

I'm planning on Saturday, meeting around 11:30'ish at the Oasis Truckstop at exit 53 (Wilcox Rd exit) on I-10 in Alabama.

I haven't been out to Eglin Range in a long time- over 10 years. When I was station at Eglin A.F.B. I used to run the trails south-east of Crestview. I do plan on getting a permit 'sometime' and check out the trails near Hwy 123 between Crestview and Eglin- there's supposed to be camping allowed and a lake down in there somewhere. Also the area off of Hwy 87 near Navarre, has a couple trails down there, that I'd like to check out.

1_sick_Rubicon 07-16-2012 06:02 PM

As of right now you can count me in unless something comes up. Is this the address for that place?

27801 County Road 64 Ext #53, Robertsdale, AL?

Yes it's tomorrow 11:30ish, this place isn't hard-core, it's a great place to get a feel for your jeep- how it rides off road, and it gives you an idea of what it's capable of. come on out if you want to, we'll be meeting at the Oasis truckstop at the above address (if you have a gps), just top off with gas and pack a lunch or a snack, I usually stop at one of the sand bars for a break.
