ORH top installed

4 Attachment(s)
Finally installed the ORH top I ordered awhile back. Completely modular, and the only "frame" involved (other than the side rails, which stay attached to the Jeep) consists of a center channel on top of the sound bar (where the front & rear bikinis attach) a header bar, a tailgate bar, and two door rods that can be removed by unscrewing a single knob. Overhead, there's nothing.

Install was pretty easy (despite the directions ) until the very end, when I was putting the bikini over the driver/passenger seats. Took over an hour of sweating to stretch the fabric enough to get the rear clips to snap into the center channel. Four Irwin Quick-Grips and a 32 oz bottle of orange Gatorade later, I got the SOB together. Felt like my fingers were broken in at least 14 places.

One thing's for sure, for a top that's largely frameless, this sucker is stout. At one point yesterday, fighting that front bikini top, I actually climbed onto the roof to pull from the middle. Obviously I didn't do trampoline bounces on the unsupported section over the passenger row seats, but I was laying down on it and there wasn't a whole lotta give.

I've gotta leave the top on for the next couple of days to let the bikinis stretch a little, but after that I'll take off sections and show y'all how it goes on the Jeep. Pretty ingenious, really.

Also, you'll see that the fabric's a little loose on the side windows in my photos; I put the canvas loops on wrong, so there's more play than there should be...thought about fixing it this a.m., but Tim said it wouldn't hurt anything and that I should wait till the tops themselves finish learning their shapes.

Tomorrow I'm gonna drive up to the coin wash and hose it down, see what's what in terms of leakage. I'll let y'all know.

Here's a link to the ORH site, for those who have no idea what the title to the thread was about:

OFFROAD HEROS - JK UNLIMITED FASTBACK TOP

And here's a few pics...kinda lame, as I only had about 1/2 an hour to spend on it in between some other stuff.

Looks awesome! By far one of the best soft top systems on the market. I am a big fan of this top. Looks really sharp, nice job.

Sa-------------weet

Like any top though , I thought outside temp had to be in the 70's for proper install?

SullyRock71 02-01-2012 07:16 PM

To reiterate the other comments, that's pretty bad ass!

48 here yesterday, shattered the record, and my garage is so well-insulated that a simple space heater made if feel like Rio de Janeiro. I did everything in my garage, which definitely contributed to the PITA factor. :D

It was either that, or wait till Spring.

I tried to install my NX in the fall, 60's at night.
My windows were an inch away from the slots in the door surrounds.
Best I could do was blast the heat for a half an hour. Besides frying all my havoc switches and blowing the heater resistor, I finally got it to fit.

Assuming that is why you had a hard time.
Instructions did say 72 degrees and for best results to leave spread out in the sun for a while :)

Yeah, that's pretty much what this needed, I think...some direct sunlight. But it was close to 75 in my garage. The fabric on those bad boys is really thick. My ribs were sore this morning, and I work out every other day.

Skipped today, though. WTF. :D

kjeeper10 02-01-2012 08:21 PM

I don't mind. It's flattering, actually. I swipe stuff from Jimbo all the time...except for the stirrup thing. Don't want one of those. :D

Wait till Spring gets here...got a few surprises that are just sitting in my garage, waiting for warmer climes. Summer Jeep will be very different from Winter Jeep. :)

kbbwolf I love your top :thumb: I am real close to pulling the trigger on a ORH top myself. What was your purchase experience like? I have read some bad some good but ultimately almost everybody seems to love the top when they get it.

kjeeper10 02-01-2012 08:35 PM

Oh no .... KB's got chrome wheels :D

1CrzyCelt 02-01-2012 08:36 PM

They don't make them for the 2dr yet anyways.

Phishe 02-01-2012 08:37 PM

2 door non-fastback?

Does ORH make a 2 door version that's not fastback? Unfortunately, the website isn't navigable at all.

Phishe 02-01-2012 08:40 PM

Also, KB, let us know what the process is to take it down and where everything is stored when it's all down?

When I open the page, across the top you have:

Home Fastback Cargo Top Multi Top JK2DR Contact us

You can e-mail Tim, but I don't know how diligent he is about responding. I've always talked to him on the phone.

His e-mail is: serviceoffroadheros@gmail.com
Phone: (780) 432-8144

Pretty sure he DID make tops for 2-doors. But he's been changing up a bunch of things, so I'd e-mail or call him and see. He's kind of a mad scientist type...He called me last night around 10 p.m., and he was still in his garage working on somebody's top.

If you're overly impatient, you might be better off looking at the Bestop. I ordered my top on Nov 7 and got it the 2nd week of Jan. I only checked in with him one time. He gets a little frazzled with people who e-mail or call him a lot, wanting updates.

He WILL bend over backwards to help you figure out how to install it, or to fix any problems you have with the top. He does care. But he's a one man show, and sometimes I think he might be stretched a little thin.

Seems to me like they're about as dark as the ones on my OE top. I wouldn't know the percentage unless the plastic told me through a megaphone. :)

1CrzyCelt 02-01-2012 09:12 PM

Wolf,
you wouldn't happen to know the tint percentage on that, would you?
