Best carb setup for 89 4.2

I have decided to upgrade the carb on my 89 due to the constant bogging down with acceleration. Have read that a 2100 or 2150 motor craft is a good choice and have seen the kits on ebay. Is this the best way to go?

shadyjeep 02-05-2012 01:16 PM

I just replaced my Weber 34 DGEC carburetor with the Motorcraft 2150 from the Ebay guy. He sent me a Carburetor that was set up for my region and was a perfect fit for my driving needs. He was great to work with and his kit was ready to go. I would suggest it to anyone who is looking for a trouble free Carb and doesn't have the money for fuel injection swap. I had severe bogging and other issues and all have been perfect since the swap. I did replace all gaskets and vac lines prior to swap. I have a 1990. I have great low end and around town acceleration and no problem on the highway either. Good Luck!

If you are dead set on keeping a carb setup, good luck.

If you want to spend a little more and gain ALOT, try this:
http://howellefi.com/tbi-kit-1987-91...ons-legal.html

not only do you get Fuel Injection, but you eliminate 70% of the underhood mess and tangles of vacuum lines, you lose the Pulse air injection, and gain a boatload of power and dependability.

Motorcraft along with the Nutter Bypass is the way to go.

Ordered a mc2150 kit from the ebay guy. I feel comfortable about the nutter bypass other than changing the timing. Is this difficult?

DrZ 02-10-2012 02:24 AM

just Nutted my 89 Sahara 2 days ago. The timing was a snap, but I am ordering the 2150 from the Ebay dude (still got the stock carter)
Also, i got the DUI dizzy coming my way with new plugs and performance wires. Should have it in all by next week.

How many vacuum lines are eliminated with the nutter bypass and motorcraft?

CharTay 02-15-2012 08:46 PM

You can get rid of most of them with out the Nutter bypass. Idk y everyone thinks that u need a Nutter bypass to get rid of them

thanks i'll look. i found a guy named topspeed something that was a top seller, but after contacting him he wasnt familiar with using the 2150 on jeeps....i'll look for your guy.

Here is his eBay seller name: ehrmannmp

Working on my install now. Carb looks great. Mine hasn't started yet, though not due to carb. I'm chasing an ignition issue that started before carb swap.

If you have trouble with your carb, he is no help despite what the ad says. He sends more or less what he describes aside from the base internals setup, so tuning is still needed including possibly needing to swap jets and power valves at times... He just sells them, he is not a carb guru and does not send you a base tuned, plug ang play setup. I bought one from him and the base setup he sent would barely come off idle, even though he claims he will send proper jets and PV for your location. I needed both jets and PV swapped, along with float adjustment. After about 20 emails over 2 weeks, I got him to send me the Jets for free, but he ignored all requests about the PV. If you know how to tune a carb, you are set, but if you don't, his carbs a no better than any other you'd find out there aside from his cobbled together "kit" and linkage consisting of parts you can get at any auto parts chain and hardware store... I just don't feel that he backs up the claims in his ad.

I am confused as well. Is the Nutter not specific to the Carter BBD? I thought you were fixing the pin dealy inside the carb. I have a Weber and have ripped out ALL the vacuum BS besides Dist advance, power brake booster and the little manifold line that goes inside the dash for the HVAC. And yes I have done the coyote-97TJ CAD elim and the dark proximity 4wd light retention so all that BS is gone as well.

Computers and web sites are a challenge to me so bear with me...
I've spent hours looking at links and threads concerning carbs and ignition issues with an 89 jeep wrangler, 4.2.
I'm ready to buy a 2150 carb and whatever else in needed for it. WHAT is "the rest"?
I want to get ride of the dist system. HEI, what all is recommended for this swap?
I live in northern Virginia (emissions testing)and have a house in West Virginia west of Winchester if anybody is local that wants to meet with me to go over what I need to do. If not can somebody help me out with what their thoughts are and where to get the parts at a fair price.
I'm not ready to got to junk yards and find an old dist to modify. I used to do all that, getting too old now.
I did do the "nutter" 8 years ago and it has passed better that when all the junk was hooked up.

X2. I got a motorcrap from the ebay guy and it was junk.

googoo 08-22-2012 03:54 PM

I ordered the 2150 from the ebay guy and I have no complaints. The nutter bypass was a must do in my case. I have a 1990 YJ 4.2...Thought my problem was the carb originally so I bought the new carb and things seemed fine until I realized the ecm wouldn't recognize the new carb ...its a different animal. Still had the ignition gremlin but don't regret upgrading to the mc2150. Turns out ...(after changing almost everything in the ignition system) to no avail I.might add...that ingenious did the Nutter...she seems fine

BDK 08-22-2012 10:28 PM

I picked up a 2150 from my buddy for $25 and rebuilt it. Total was $40.

You can find them on Clist, Ebay or your local pick a part yard. Just be sure it's a 1.08 venturi model.

If you are the least bit handy w/ a wrench, you can put the entire thing together (including reubuild kit, carb cleaner, air filter, gaskets, throttle linkage & adapter) for about 75 bucks.

I've got mine tuned for mileage (now gets 15+ in town & 20 highway, if I keep it at 70mph)....and will bark the tires whenever I want, with fantastic throttle response everywhere. 650 RPM idle that's smooth as silk.

It looks & performs like a brand new carb.

roadyrob 08-23-2012 11:19 AM

I'm another fan of holley, running an offenhauser manifold and a 470 cfm 4 barrel. around 16 mpg in town and way more power than the weber I had.
