Boat Sides

Was wondering if anybody has ever "boat sided" their Jeep.

Boat siding is where you trim the body tub up several inches and put a rock slider or similar in to help pull the side of the Jeep in for added side clearance.

Here's a sample:

Been considering it (especially since I just used that area as a pivot point over a decent sized boulder recently)...

if it didn't require cutting away that whole section of body tub i'm sure more people would do it. i had considered going that route myself, but i think some rocker guards will do just fine for me.

i think its pretty cool. i considered it but once i started reading about it, it sounds like a PITA to do. i prefer to just get a 12 pack and start sawing $h!t, apparently on this, theres some work involved. To quote the Simpsons: "work was hard, so we quit"

Boatsides are cool for buggy's but I dig my rocker's:)

With a low center of weight, it would be great. When you get one up in the air, like mine, with a higher center of gravity, the tip over factor, goes way up. The standard rockers work great, and keep me from rolling over. Just another point of view........:D

How do you show off trail damage with those!?!?!? I need my angular corner to inform me that i smacked the sh*t out of my jeep.

How would boatsides raise your center of gravity?

BTT - I like the idea and like the look too. I'm not so sure I have the balls to cut up the tub on my rig though but if you do then go for it.

The Nth "Smasher Basher" rocker guards give you a "boat side" look without having to hack up your junk. AEV should be offering them for sale at the end of the month or beginning of Jan.

mrbigjeep 12-10-2007 08:33 AM

knowing AEV they will probably only be about $10,000

AzTJ 12-10-2007 01:45 PM

lol yeah right. They said everything will remain as close to original prices as possible.

that second pic looks like the jeep is sleeping in the mud

He was meaning that since his rig has a higher COG he thinks the boat sides would actually cause him to slide over and dump it more so than with the regular rockers on there where they will sit on a rock or ledge and help keep it from going over.

I see. I misunderstood what he was saying.
