Polk Audio db651

Looking for some opinions on these speakers in 2012 JKUR. Am going to install Tuffy security deck enclosure. Was thinking that the sub will be a waste of space so I am going to remove it from rear. Want to upgrade the speakers in the front and the bar with a little better base. The Polk Audio db651 look like fairly decent price plus marine grade for when I get them wet. Anyone have these are they worth upgrade over stock, especially without a sub? Better options for similar price?

Renegade4x4 02-07-2012 08:22 AM

A lot of people are using them or the kickers that are a direct replacement. I have the Polk db651s on order. I am also putting in db6501s in the front.

JandS 02-07-2012 08:28 AM

These are really nice speakers at the price point.
I use them on one of our cars and on our boat (they make a marine version).
A lot of Elise/Exige owners swear by them - they are MUCH better than the stock speakers.

vacca foeda 02-07-2012 08:42 AM

i just put the dxi650s in to my soundbar and have been really happy. i think those are the marine rated version of the db's. for $105 (speakers plus a pillow for poly fill) it's made a noticable difference

New2012JEEP 02-07-2012 08:48 AM

I went with 650's too. I like Polk for their durability, and quality. I have had polk in my home for a very long time.

Typically in my previous auto's I went the MB Quart or Boston route, but different price points there.

Thanks ordered 2 pair and bag polyfil. $58 pair on Amazon with free shipping. Crutchfield was $100. Used to like Crutchfield and would pay premium but to far outta wack price wise

I'm not sure what the difference is between the two. According to Crutchfield, BOTH of theses speakers (DXi650 and DB650) are marine grade... they have identical specs.

Marine Certified: Polk db Series speakers are built to withstand exposure to moisture and UV rays, so they work well in boats and cars. They also include stainless mounting hardware for corrosion and rust resistance

Marine Certified: Every DXi Series loudspeaker is designed not only to withstand the demands of a car's sun-baked climate, but corrosive marine environments, too. That meant subjecting every DXi speaker to ASTM (American Society for Testing and materials) scrutiny to ensure they were suitable for the marine environment. The DXi speakers were subjected to a series of grueling accelerated weathering tests to see if they could stand up to a harsh marine environment. Polk subjected the DXi Series speakers to hundreds of hours of salt fog, intense ultra violet light and temperatures ranging from minus 40 C (-40 F) to +85 C (+185 F), and the speakers passed them all.

Funny - I ran into this exact situation. Crutchfield won't price match either. Here's the chat log - they wouldn't budge, mainly saying their 'service' is worth the price (as well as the free mounting hardware).

01/26/2012 11:07:45AM Agent (Keith): "Hi, my name is Keith. How may I help you today?"
01/26/2012 11:08:36AM Jonathan: "Hi Keith. Does Crutchfield do any price matching? I really like the Polk DB 651s speakers - but Amazon has them for $40 less (which surpasses the value of the free wiring bracket you guys include)."

01/26/2012 11:10:29AM Agent (Keith): "No, we don't match prices."
01/26/2012 11:12:05AM Jonathan: "That's a bit disappointing, as I really wanted to give you my business."
01/26/2012 11:12:51AM Agent (Keith): "Here's a link to Polk's site that lists their authorized online dealers:"
01/26/2012 11:12:54AM Agent (Keith) sends page: "http://www.polkaudio.com/dealerlocator/online.php"
01/26/2012 11:13:32AM Agent (Keith): "Amazon isn't listed for the DB series or King's Audio."
01/26/2012 11:14:01AM Jonathan: "But Amazon is listed for Polk in general, so that's odd"
01/26/2012 11:14:36AM Agent (Keith): "They are authorized for certain products, but it appears 3 King's Audio is the company actually selling them through Amazon."
01/26/2012 11:15:05AM Jonathan: "I see."
01/26/2012 11:15:15AM Jonathan: "So if one of the authorized resellers had a lower price..."

01/26/2012 11:17:18AM Agent (Keith): "And we have a Tech Support Dept you can call with any questions during the install."
01/26/2012 11:18:14AM Jonathan: "Gotcha. Thx"

vacca foeda 02-07-2012 10:55 AM

from everything i've read, there isn't much difference between the two, the dxi is apparently just a new version. might be more of a marketing hype than anything, but more fancy words must equal a more better speaker, right?

denisbaldwin 02-07-2012 11:03 AM

I will stand behind the DB series Polk speakers. I have 6 of them in my wrangler, 4 of them in my S10 and 4 of them in my Miata. They've been very good sound quality for the price and I never have to worry about what environment they are in.

silvrevo 02-08-2012 11:38 AM

Polk are direct plu and play,,, no soder, or extra brackets?

Thanks

Thanks

If you buy them from Crutchfield they will send you wiring adapters and bracketry specific to your vehicle.

denisbaldwin 02-08-2012 11:49 AM

Silvrevo - They have the little tabs on them. I use spades like these, crimped down onto 12ga wire. Work fine, no solder required.

devicemanager 02-08-2012 01:00 PM

For those that have the factory "2 ohm" Infinity amp, wouldn't you be better off using a 2 ohm speaker such as the Infinity 62.9?

Snailpower 02-08-2012 01:12 PM

I ordered the 2 ohm 62.9 - they have a 95 db sensitivity. Not here yet, but should have them in by the weekend if I can get it out of the dealership....

Without sounding too stupid. What's the difference? Will the polls work and what benefit of 2amps speakers? Are those in same price range?

does Radio Shack sell these or something similar to fit the Polk speakers to the Wrangler??

denisbaldwin 02-10-2012 07:48 AM

Should.. and so should any home depot, lowes, etc. I just crimped the spades on and slid them onto the connectors. They fit pretty snug, though I would probably solder them next time I take them apart.

vacca foeda 02-10-2012 09:55 AM

people say that with the factory headunit set up for 2 ohm replacing speakers with 4 ohm will effectively halve your output, but won't cause any issues. i've only replaced the rollbar speakers (with the polk dxi's and stuffed with poly fil) but found that the new speakers are actually louder than the factory. this could be due to the polyfil, not sure because i did both at the same time, but at the end of the day, i'm really happy with my polks and don't regret not using 2 ohm speakers.

New2012JEEP 02-10-2012 10:15 AM

Yep, mine crimped on really good, and were very right around speaker. I actually had the Polks for 2 weeks without polyfil, and they sounded okay. When I put poly fil in, those speakers jammed!

fishmd 02-10-2012 10:37 AM

Are you guys who are replacing stock speakers with the polks replacing the Infiniti speakers or just stockers, and are you putting in a new amp or using factory amp?

Thanks.

judofish 02-10-2012 10:44 AM

I replaced all four of the factory speakers and the component tweeters with Addictive Audio units and we filled the dash boxes and sports bar with dense sound matting. The sound is so much better than stock. The AA Exeutia8 subs and custom box are next.

Mine were not Infinity. To date; All I have done is replace soundbar speakers, and they dramatically increased performance with poly fil.

I believe I've seen references to that here on the forums before.
Admittedly I didn't do much homework on this purchase, instead going for the good name and recommendations online.

The DB652Ss that I installed sound great, but you make me wonder how much better it might be by matching up the impedances??

worked perfectly...i just cut the end of the speaker wire near the white connector and stripped the insulation off the wire and crimped those suckers right on. damn, what a nice improvement in sound quality.

silvrevo 02-10-2012 06:22 PM

Say the sound bar wires,, which is positive the green or the blue?

Im not using the adaptor just crimping the connectors

Thanks!!

BillyPete 02-10-2012 06:59 PM

Just finished putting in a set of these Polks and the polyfil, man what a difference!

I soldered mine also, I cant stand loose connections.
The light blue is positive on the RH speaker and the black with white tracer is positive on the LH speaker in the sound bar. :punk:

silvrevo 02-10-2012 07:44 PM

Thanks a ton Billy!!!

Ill have to finish tomorrow. Forgot the pollyfill

I no soder,, but i can crimp hard!

Also waiting on a mb quart ref 4.8 amp to get back in stock
80wx4!!

MPScan 02-10-2012 09:11 PM

So in summary, if I take my stock '12 JKUR w/Infinity system, replace the sound bar and the dash speakers with four Polk db651's and poly fill ... keeping the stock head unit and stock amp ... it will result in a pretty decent upgrade in sound all around?

silvrevo 02-10-2012 09:11 PM

Big connector Positve

Small connector negative

Correct??

Thanks.
