got bored, removed front sway bar

yep, title says it all......i went wheeling in it where my club goes for meetings on friday night, and didnt pull out my poor mans discos that consist of simple cotter pins from ACE hardware..lol...well, one fell out while i was wheeling, and drove it home with one side connected and the other, not connected...so, the next day, i was going to go get another pin, then thought, what the hell, ill just completely remove the bar....and i gotta tell ya, its hard to notice, besides when i turn REALLY fast, faster then normal for me...but i just drive like normal, my normal that is, not real fast, not real slow, and its hard to tell i even took it out.......so today, i took it some where to test the articulation with no front sway, and it was AWESOME!..lol..i drove the front right tire up onto a 2 foot or higher object and left the drivers front tire on the ground and could barely tell one tire was lower then the other

i know thats small to all of you, but, ive never really driven it disconnected...only one other time, and i didnt get to test the flex really

some people in my club told me to do it after i lost the pin...they said theyve done it b4 and its not bad...i always heard that the TJs are a bad idea to do that with bc of the coils, but, half the people in my club with TJs do that in BOTH the front and rear and use them as DD's.....i cant wait till i get my REBB lift on it and try it

hell yeah. swaybars suck. i pulled mine and my trackbar(s) (I have a yj though :D ) i ran my 99 dodge (coil sprung) with no swaybar up froint also. frees up a TON of flex

Yeah you can get away with it up to about 2" on short arms. After that the suspension just wants to steer too damn much with dips and what not in the road (if not then you're running shocks that are too stiff for the application).

SouthTJ 03-21-2006 01:06 PM

I have heard that you are to never never never remove the rear on the TJs. Too dangerous.

JeepCrawler98 03-21-2006 01:16 PM

To some extent - basically what it boils down to is the side-hill rolling motion that removing the rear loosens up is not at all worth the extra 1" of suspension travel you may get since it's a very light sway bar. I used to run it disconnected when I was stock, then when I lifted it some I reconnected it. For shits and giggles I disconnected it a few months ago - scared the crap out of me off-road.

It depends on your comfort level like JeepCrawler said above. I have a couple friends that decided not to put the sway bar back on when doing their 8.8 swaps and it doesn't bother them at all to wheel it and drive it that way.

i haven't had a front sway bar in about two years and i'm ok with it. granted, i've been stock height till about two weeks ago.

thats bc of the coils...i got reemed up one side and down the other on jeepforum.com about it...one guy even campared me to a drunk driver....said im putting everyone at risk...some of the people over there can be complete.............(fill in the blank)

i am completely aware of the dangers i have opened up by removing the front sway bar...i know in an evasive maneuver, itll be pretty damn scary....but, im not worried about it...as i said in my first post, i know some say not to do that with TJs bc of the coils, but no one in my club saw a problem with it, some have had the front discoed for 4-5 years now...one even has a 6 inch lift with 35's and he has had the front discoed for 2 years, and told me, as long as i dont take an exit ramp at 70 or what ever, ill be fine

so how does it do with no front sway and a lift bc i have a 2 inch lift im getting ready to put on here pretty soon

khenderson 03-21-2006 02:14 PM

it's still handling fine for me. like you said, as long as i'm not taking it down an exit ramp at 70(i don't drive but 55 anyways) i'll be fine. i know it's not a sports car and i don't drive it like that so i have no problems with the front being discoed.

EXACTLY!..lol...dont take that statement over to jeepforum.com tho..lol...but thats exactly what i said over there

i said, its a jeep and its not meant to be driven like a corvette anyways...and, even WITH a front sway bar, if im driving 55-60 and a deer or something jumps out in front of me and surprises me so much that i swerve outa the way, its still likely to roll over bc its a jeep...that simple...like i told them, tho, on the interstate, i usually dont go over 60 any ways, even tho the limit is 65 here, and when im on the back roads, i slow down when even i come up to a small group of woods, so i dont get as surprised if a deer comes jumping out...im not saying ill never have to make an evasive maneuver, but i think i do a well enough job to justify taking the front bar off

when i bought my jeep 4 months ago the sway bar linkages where busted out at the joint because the tires rubbed them till the broke. but i havent had the $80 to get newer bigger ones or disconnect ones. and i drive fine with out it, mind you i have driven with one at all. but the articulation in cool. and now that i own a jeep i dont drive as fast as i used to because when i brought it home i want to see how fast it would go (stupid me) on the interstate ( still no sway bar) i hit about 75 when gust of wind hit me at the front and i thought i was flying the was so much lift in the front, then i thought i just bought this jeep and i am going to roll it the first day i own it. but didnt so i slowed down and dont got over 55 now.

i hear that driving with the top and doors off is a scary experiance on the highway. i thought an 18 wheeler was just gonna toss me off the road and the high winds make me look like i am drunk driving. but i wouldnt trade my jeep for anything

Nah, just remember to drive it like a jeep and keep your hand and feet inside the ride at all times.:D Besides the wind doesn't affect you as much when there is no resistance by those silly top and doors.

mswilder 03-21-2006 07:06 PM

yea that paticular day i had the top down and half doors off. but what really hate is when the top is on and i cross a lake bridge and it feels like i am about to end up in the lake, but when the top is down no worries, and i have only been jeep owner for 4 months and i already know i am never going back, and wondering why i hadnt got one sooner. and now my family has the bug and my mom wants one and my 16 Y/O sister wants one. so i dont know if i started a good thing or a bad thing around them two.
