$2000 tj

I have a new TJ project in the garage. Fortunately/Unfortunately it is not mine. I say fortunately because I don't get to spend enough money on my own TJ, much less two TJs. I say unfortunately because...hey, it would be fun to have two.

My buddy picked this up from a friend of his. She was moving up north (from central Texas) and just picked up a Tahoe, so she needed to get rid of the Jeep. She sold it to him for $2000 and that is where it starts for us.
*I will note that my wife gave me full permission to buy it myself if he didn't.....can't pass up a TJ for $2000*

For $2000 you wouldn't expect too much; however, it is a great starting point for a tame build. It was her daily driver and started life in Colorado. From there went back and forth from San Antonio to Houston. It has about 145k miles on it. It's s SE, so all that implies (4cyl, 5spd, d30/d35, etc). It is pretty bare bones, but has a newer stereo, newer front seats, newer Bestop soft top, and a tow hitch.

The final destination of this Jeep is somewhat unknown. My buddy might sell it after fixing it up or he might keep it for his daughter to drive in the next year.

I snapped a couple garage pics last night.....

You might wonder why it is in my garage.....
I've got the space and the tools. My three car garage will satisfy the space to work on this and I have the 'knowledge' of where to go with this thing.

First order of business is a bath. The Jeep, not me. The top is in good shape but you can't tell because it is so dirty. The rest of the Jeep is filthy from being bounced around the oil fields outside San Antonio for the last couple of years.
After it's clean, the top will come off to aid in cleaning the interior. It seems having a clean slate is the best way to start addressing what needs attention, and in what order.

Things I know from a short drive with it:

needs new brakes
needs an alignment
needs lift/wheels with different offset
needs new shocks
likely needs a host of new bushings

All that said, it actually drives pretty well...just a little sloppy.

It needs a new driver's front fender (let me know if you have one :) ) and needs a lot of surface rust cleaning underneath.

We're going to do a tune-up and the brakes soon, and the fuel gauge doesn't work, so we need to address that.
I am going to work on a lot of the cosmetic junk in spare time. We might throw an inexpensive lift on it to give it a little edge. The springs sag and the shocks need to be replaced, so a small lift might be in order. We'll likely go with some black steelies and 3X" tires.

Once we get it clean, we'll decide if it's getting a complete paint job, or just the front clip (after new fender). Black is hard to match so I am pushing for full paint.

Great deal...sounds like all the work is fairly minor. I know guys that have bought totalled SE's for $2000. :thumb:

Nice little project! I'll watch!

I figure that there are people selling YJs for more than twice that, so worst case is we put it on craigslist today and double the investment without even trying.

With a little cleaning, painting, and possibly some cosmetic upgrades, it will be a pretty nice Jeep either to keep for his daughter, or to sell.

Ha, mine has the same rust spot starting on the drives fender... Good luck with the build, and nice buy.

Not bad.. :thumb:

Ordered some stuff for the Jeep today.

RC 2.5" suspension
RC 1.25" body lift
RC 1" motor mount lift
RC swaybar disconnects
RC steering stabilizer

Won't make excuses for it. I'm not footing the bill, just doing the work. It will be a good setup for this Jeep.

A new driver's fender is also on order.

You could always just cut the fender to get rid of the rust and install some MCE fenders or a set of tube fenders...

LouieDelTorchio 02-21-2012 01:14 AM

Hey you want to work on my jeep next? ;)

That would've been the way I would've gone (in some form or fashion...I like the new UCF fenders - coming soon), but my buddy is not in to that style :(

Heck yeah, bring it down! All I need is your Jeep and your money :D:D

TnDz TJ 02-21-2012 07:23 AM

Nice find!!!!

LouieDelTorchio 02-21-2012 01:04 PM

By the way, sorry about no pictures of the sub. I'm going to go take some now and post them soon.

TXST8tj 02-21-2012 02:05 PM

That's cool man. Just anxious to see your setup.

How are you liking it?

I am thinking about making another one for this TJ. I haven't done anything with the other half of my sheet of MDF. Even if we don't put a sub in it, I could at least make the trunk portion. I do have an extra 10" sub, so we'll see.

erickpl 02-21-2012 02:31 PM

Um, you could use that 10" sub and make a box for my TJ... :D

GoldenSahara00 02-21-2012 03:14 PM

Wow wht a steal

denisbaldwin 02-21-2012 03:32 PM

A $2000 TJ is a steal! I'd have snatched that up in a heartbeat.

Got the pictures! woot. Here you go!

Sounds pretty good. I messed up when cutting the hole for the terminal. i forgot and cut it too low :/ It left a small hole where air escapes from, gotta fix it. You can see that i covered the outside of it with a piece of wood. I also elevated the amp, which gave me a vibrating problem that was really loud, so as a temporary fix i stuffed a rag under it, probably not a good thing for heat but oh well. Also I only put one coat on it so i have to do another which sucks cause getting that box in is a bitch.

All credit goes to you though man. The dimensions were straight on. Im playing all these songs on my ipod and they all sound brand new haha.

TXST8tj 02-21-2012 06:46 PM

Paul,

You wouldn't want that 'extra' sub I have. It's a Sony Exploder 10" from a buddy's old project.

Louie,

The enclosure looks great. Now I see what you mean about how light the Herculiner went on. That is actually pretty nuts how light it is. Even as a first coat, it should've been a lot thicker than that and given even coverage. A second coat should only have been needed to thicken it all up.

LouieDelTorchio 02-21-2012 09:31 PM

yea hopefully ill get a thick coat on it. My next project is to make all my trimming red and get rid of this stupid white double stripe that goes down the sides. I'm excited :)

What trim are you painted red?...inside I presume. Heat up the stripes with a hair dryer. It will help a lot. Keep it moving though, or you'll burn the paint.

If I'm not busy with leveling kit installs on Sunday, I'll likely start the lift(s) install....parts will be at the house by Thursday. Hopefully I get back to town before the UPS guy makes it to the house; otherwise my wife will have about 400 pounds of "stuff" to pull off the front porch into the garage.
There was also a 4" YJ kit, Bestop auto-drop steps, Bestop oversized tire carrier, and a couple other do-dads in that same shipment :D

LouieDelTorchio 02-21-2012 11:03 PM

By trims I mean the headlight bezel, grill inserts, jeep logo on the swaybar cover, jeep and wrangler logos on the sides, and I might add some. Then I'm also going to paint some of the interior. Going to be cool.

TXST8tj 02-23-2012 10:58 PM

Some parts came in yesterday while I was out of town. My poor wife had to drag it all in the garage.

My buddy's 4" kit for his CJ7....otherwise known as "some U-shaped heavy things" again, by the poor woman that had to move them.

Looks good! From the picture it looks like the top is close to being new or at least well taken care of. ;)

Your wife is a champ. Those "U-shaped heavy things" are exactly that. Heavy.

Just thinking the same. My back was really acting up last week so I couldn't lift much. Fed Ex left a nice but heavy 65 pound winch on the doorstep. She carried it in. We need to give our wives and girlfriends a lot of credit on how they help out with our "obsessions" (aka-Jeep). :flowers::flowers:

It is in quite good shape. It still needs a good scrub down and cleaning, but it is definitely an asset to this Jeep.

TXST8tj 02-27-2012 06:16 PM

Twas my Monday off from the office so I installed the Bestop Powerboard steps on a 2012 F-150

http://i929.photobucket.com/albums/a...d/f553da2c.jpg

and installed the RC 2.5" suspension, quick disconnects, and steering stabilizer. I'm tired, so the body lift and motor mount lift will come another day soon.

I actually haven't bothered to start cleaning it yet. I figured it would be easier on me if it was higher.

TJe0454 02-27-2012 07:40 PM

looks like a cool project. you should easily double the investment
