winch advise

Any suggestions on a good winch that doesnt cost an arm and a leg?

CG3 02-18-2012 04:40 PM

Good would = 1.5x gvw + load.

Amount of intended use would dictate power/line speed etc...

I hope to never have to use mine. I bought the Warn VR-10,000 with synthetic rope to save weight and as a safety factor... Good price point. Less expensive with steel rope.

How much was it?

Google is your friend..... I think the steel rope is about five n' change and the synthetic is about 7 or so. I got a $50.00 rebate at the time.

Check our vendors for prices.....

I bought a Recon winch. So far I've had no problems. It comes with synthetic line and costs about $475.00

If you are looking for an affordable winch, the new Quadratec model looks like a winner:
Q-Series Winches by Quadratec - Quadratec

I also like the Warn VR series:
WARN 86245 - WARN VR8000 Winch with 94' Wire Rope and Roller Fairlead - Quadratec

If you need something REALLY cheap, take a look at Harbor Frieght's line of Badlands winches. Lots of specs for the money and I know they do destructive R&D testing. Although, we did a winch shootout and Harbor Fright's didn't work out of the box, but we found out later that it was a simple switch in the remote that was bad.

This info doesn't exactly apply to you, but it should help you to learn about winches. As a side note, I wasn't 100-percent down with the testing criteria, so use it as a guide to educate, rather than an end, all be all:

Here is the Warn M8000 from Amazon. I bought one from them and got a $50 rebate from Warn.
Works great!

WARN VR Series. Good bang for the buck.

WARN VR Series, WARN M8000, ENGO Series Winches, Smittybuilt, Recon...

Just some off the top of my head that you would be happy with

silver07wrangler 02-19-2012 05:20 AM

just bought smittybuilt xrc8000 pro comp with syn rope for 450.00 delivered from 4wheel parts for 2012 jks 2dr out whelling in withlacoochee state forest in FL and came across a couple in a f250 flat bed buried and on the frame my brother has a 2001 wrangler with same winch we had to hook to each other because we were out weighed and the SBuilt did not even groan to winch him out so i give the smitty a 10 well worh the money and did not break the bank good luck and happy wheelin

love the synn rope according to review weighs 30lbs less than wire rope and is 45% stronger and it does not tangle or kink like wire rope

With in the next few months I will be getting the aluminum XHD front bumper and the Smittybilt X2O comp 10 winch. The X2Os have a life time warranty, like warn, and are completely water proof. There is a video out there where the Smittybilt guys have the winch submerged in a tank for a month and running it under water. The comp series comes with syn line and a different fair lead. There website show a store that sells it for $650, with free shipping. The comp 8 series is a little cheaper from the same place. Water proof, and life time warranty is what sold me. I knew a couple of guys that had them and swore by the non-comp, non-X2O models.

Bought the Warn Wireless Control for safety on my receiver mounted M8000. It transmits out beyond the length of my 100' cable for easy single person use. Plugs right into cable remote port of the M8000. So 5 second install. I just hang the antenna/receiver box from my hood (or from my tire carrier when winching from rear receiver hitch) and can get out to a 100' radius in any direction from winch. 100' away is plenty safe for me.
I plan on making a custom receiver 2" throat welded to a 3/8" plate to bolt into winch mount bolt holes on my Mopar Offroad Front Winch bumper I have yet to install. Need to cut a 2" hole with a plasma cutter where the cable slot is before I install the front bumper.
I bought the Mopar Winch cover plate to hide the custom receiver mount installed in lieu of the winch.
Hidden front receiver and less weight without winch mounted up front.

The M8000 is mounted to the Warn Receiver mount as well. Warn all the way.

I can still mount a winch into my bumper later if I change my mind. Can hide the 2" hole(that I cut to accomodate the receiver mount) with a roller fairlead.
