lift question

I'm wantin to go with a 4 inch lift with 33's will i need to regear ?????

XJ Knight 02-22-2012 12:13 AM

Need to.. NO.. May you want to.. YES.. It all depends on how tollerant you will be of your power loss.. What stock gearing you have and what transmision you have can effect that. You should only regear once so if you have any thought of ever running 35's then don't regear now.. Also what rear axle you have will play apart into regearing as well..

allblackwrangler00 02-22-2012 12:15 AM

everything is stock i believe its 3.73 gears !!!

6InARowMakesItGo 02-22-2012 12:17 AM

your engine will play a part as well. which one do you have?

allblackwrangler00 02-22-2012 12:19 AM

its the I6 4.0

XJ Knight 02-22-2012 12:45 AM

which trans?

TurD35 or D44 Rear axle?

allblackwrangler00 02-22-2012 01:00 AM

i googled the axel and it said it has a Dana 35C i dont know alot about cars so bare with me ... and the trans ... r u talkin stick or auto ... i have the stick

allblackwrangler00 02-22-2012 01:03 AM

the trans is the NV3550

allblackwrangler00 02-22-2012 01:10 AM

wikipedia says its the Dana 35 so ill go with that lol

Wheel2Work 02-22-2012 01:12 AM

You will probably want to change to 4.56 gearing, AFTER you have made sure that your lift is really working for you.
I bought a Jeep that the PO threw a 4" lift and 33's on and spent an easy $1500 correcting mistakes.Do a lot of research first and do the lift right the first time. You may spend more up front, but you'll thank yourself in the end!
33's on the D35 isn't a death sentence, but you really need to decide what you are building your Jeep for and then proceed in a controlled, methodical fashion. It is really easy to allow insanity to take over the modification process :D

allblackwrangler00 02-22-2012 01:18 AM

yea i believe i have the Dana 35 but im not really sure. i have been doing tons of research and trying to learn as much as i can !! its my DD so ill b on the road more than offroad but i will def be offroad .. nuthin extreme but id like to have medium flex and that sort of thing i dont want to mess it up but i want to have a little fun to i wont probably ever put it through anything rediculous but i will for sure use it like it was meant to b used !!

Wheel2Work 02-22-2012 01:25 AM

Be sure to thank the PO since he ordered the optional D44 for you! That makes upgrading a lot easier for you! You will want to look into adjustable control arms right away, since you are going to want them later... They will be a requirement when you get around to doing the SYE and change your pinion angle :)

I went from stock to 31's on my 01 4.0L, 5 spd. We have this long up hill pull on the way to the cabin-it now rquires a down shift to 3rd.
If I went any larger on the tires size I would definetly regear back to stock ratios at least...would make a big difference in riding off road. Pulling hills too.

allblackwrangler00 02-22-2012 10:53 PM

im runnin on 31's right now and ive drove it up a long up hill pull and i down shifted to fourth but i never had to go to third but i know what u mean u could tell it didnt like goin up it to much

allblackwrangler00 02-22-2012 10:54 PM

Im still not sure what axles i have !!! can i tell by just looking at them ??

XJ Knight 02-22-2012 11:05 PM

Yep I'll get the picture I have saved

XJ Knight 02-22-2012 11:09 PM

You have either a D35 or D44 rear axle.. All non rubicon TJ's came with a D30 front

allblackwrangler00 02-22-2012 11:34 PM

so since i have the D44 this means what ??? lol i know its a good thing

XJ Knight 02-22-2012 11:55 PM

Means unless your gonna be running 37's you won't need to be swaping axles and your axle gearing should be 3.73's since tmk thats all non TJ rubicons that have a D44 rear came with

allblackwrangler00 02-23-2012 12:04 AM

well i def dont plan on runnin ne thing that big 33's is what i plan on !!! so hell yea !!! preciate all ur help man !!! if ne one else thinks theres any other info i need to know by all means throw it out there im all eyes !!

XJ Knight 02-23-2012 12:23 AM

No problem.. I guess I'll throw my 2 cents in on the lift thing as well.. Im a big fan of avoiding the SYE/New DS cost as well as not having to do a T Case drop.. So with that said a 2.5in suspension lift and 1.25in bl with a 1in mml would be perfect.. especially for running 33's..

Muddyspokes 02-23-2012 10:06 AM

Now I know what rear I have too..thanks XJ Knight!

Rpkittle 02-23-2012 10:11 AM

Another way to tell which rear diff you have: d35 has rubber fill plug, d44 has a metal bolt for the fill plug.
