What I think Saved My Belt Loops

It just dawned on me that I have not lost a belt loop in the 8 years I owned my new TJ. I ordered it without the crappy side steps, hated them on my YJ since all they did was dirty the back of my pants, and now when I get out of the jeep I do not catch my belt loops on the door striker.

Do all of you that loose the loops have side steps.

jp2611 02-23-2012 05:27 AM

Other side of the coin--have an '04 TJ Sport bought in Nov '04--added steps after 6 months--never lost a belt loop.

You may already know how to exit without ripping one off.

Blackpony04 02-23-2012 12:54 PM

I already solved the mystery last week in another thread. You have to be exactly 6'1" tall. :D

I have side steps and have never snagged a belt loop. I sort of suspect it might have something to do with the way a person gets out of the Jeep as I swivel on my butt so I can get my legs over the door jamb so I exit more forward than sideways like I would in a regular car. And the more I think about it I also always hold onto the door when I exit so it doesn't swing so maybe that affects my position as well.

We'll never know as this is indeed one of Life's little mysteries!

Potoo 02-23-2012 12:59 PM

When I wear a belt it doesn't do it. I got mine in Nov and every pair of jeans are now missing a loop. I'm 6'2"

Atthehop 02-23-2012 01:18 PM

I am only 5' 8" and it did it in my old YJ.

TJDave 02-23-2012 01:31 PM

I short. 5'8".

I used to have tube steps, now I have rock sliders. I've ripped about 6 pairs of jeans since I have owned the Jeep for 5+ years. Did not matter about the steps for me. I pretty much have mastered entering and exiting the Jeep, but sometimes..........

So, I have some jeans that have holes in them. And I didn't have to pay $100+ dollars for them at Abercrombie.:thumb:

jeepjones 02-23-2012 01:34 PM

I removed my steps when I got my jeep and I'm still every once in awhile catching my belt loops. It hardly ever happens on getting out, it's always when I'm hopping in.

Dextreme 02-23-2012 02:01 PM

My speedo's don't have beltloops, so it's not a problem. :thumb: (I work out...)

crallscars 02-23-2012 02:04 PM

I usually only tear off the loops on slacks and dress pants, seldom on Levis, I'm 6 foot and almost never use the side steps getting out

AmericaOverland 02-23-2012 04:33 PM

I'm 5'7" and have never ripped my loops. I always wear a shirt or jacket over the belt area. I never tuck my shirts in when I'm wearing pants/shorts. I step into my Jeep by putting my left foot on the step and pull up on the roll bar with my right hand and plop in. The way to plop in looks like this; when I'm standing nearly straight on the step with my right foot in the Jeep, I then turn to my left at a 45 degree angle to the Jeep (overhead view). In this position, my rear is ABOVE the door jam, not to the left of it. I drop from that into my seat, rotated in this manner to let my right shoulder clear the hard top as I stoop down into my seat at about an 80-degree angle (forward view). That's why I have been missing the door jam. Plus, when I forget to do the classic showy off-road stunt like this or I'm lazy, I slide my right foot in as far forward towards the pedals as I can before I pull myself into my seat.

I-Want-A-Jeep 02-23-2012 06:24 PM

I'm 6'7" and I just curl up in a ball and heave myself into the seat, then once inside, I have to de-pretzel myself to get into optimum driving position.

I've never torn a belt loop. Course, I've only had my jeep about 7 weeks.

00silverTJ 02-23-2012 06:34 PM

Interesting.... I stopped breaking belt loops whne I ditched the side-steps. Too bad, I had thought that i was just getting smarter....

Jk11-girl 02-23-2012 06:56 PM

I have the side steps and don't use them.... I feel funny stepping up on the steps and climbing in.... Are your jeeps lifted so much that you need the steps?
I don't have a lift but I'm 5'5... And I don't bother with them. Am I missing out on some fun here?? Lol my last jeep didn't have steps and I wished that it did and now that I do have them I don't even use them... Go figure!

I didn't use them. They may have just made me step-up-in to the Jeep awkwardly.

cntryboy232 02-23-2012 07:27 PM

I have steps and i never noticed it till I read a post earlier then i looked and noticed i ripped one off. Have no idea how but I jsut got the jeep less than a month ago. I never had that problem until I got the jeep.

The "step - over" into a JK is much lower than a TJ.

She pointed that out to me right away, and that she no longer needed the steps (like she does on the TJ) but her 88 year old mom would.

Haha! Yea I get that....

ttim 02-23-2012 09:09 PM

im 6'5 and ive torn a few belt loops in my day. what i always thought the cause was that
at a taller height, my seat is further back, so that damn door striker is protruding even
more for myself than it would someone shorter, whose seat would be further forward and
more even or even in front of the striker, making it a non issue for them. in my informal
surveys, only my shorter jeep friends did not have ripped belt loops.

just think of the money you could make if you could come up with a system to re-do the
door latch setup on these jeeps! :)

NewYJOwner 02-23-2012 09:11 PM

Do you guys that keep ripping your belt loops off have the door striker covers??

oops...... just realized the tj strikers are different.

jstone326 02-23-2012 09:54 PM

I've never ripped a belt loop, in fact I don't even really see how its possible... but I guess that's just how I exit, I kinda hop in and out

My mom is like 5'2" and always has a hard time getting in and out... she has to pull herself in using the handle above the glove box, but the other day she completely failed to get in, cus she was wearing a fairly tight skirt and couldn't lift her leg up high enough to get it in lol!

MikeMTJ 02-23-2012 10:13 PM

I have side steps on my TJ, and I have yet to loss a belt loop.

My old YJ on the other hand was a belt loop eating monster. It would not only tear of the loop, you'd also rip a hole in your pants. Argh.

Redsand 02-24-2012 02:01 AM

I drive naked, so no loops to catch

s3nt3nc3d 02-24-2012 03:21 AM

I'm short (5'8")...driven without side steps for over a year, then installed steps/sliders (along with a 4.25" lift) and have had it that way 6 months or so now...never once caught any clothing on my Jeep.

Neil F. 02-24-2012 05:06 AM

I don't understand how it is possible to catch a belt loop on the horizontal U shaped striker.

Bing-Bong 02-24-2012 05:18 AM

I have side steps but dont use them, on a 2" lift. The only thing I have happen with the strikers is the seat belt catches on it then I cant shut the door. I tend to slide out of the door, being only 5' 10". :thumb:

timberland 02-24-2012 05:38 AM

I haven't ripped a belt loop or back pocket off since I sold the ol' CJ5.....every pair of jeans that I owned had the back pocket ripped off from the door jamb.

hellkatshockey 02-24-2012 06:58 PM

Got me today have only owned my jeep for 3 weeks and already a belt loop haha lol I knew jeeps were $$$ but I didn't no I'd have to buy new clothes just to drive the damn thing lol

Johnboy11 02-24-2012 08:16 PM

I have 4 pairs of jeans that have the back left loop gone lol. I have the side steps but never use them.
