can you see any wear marks on either side of the ring gear or pinion? when i destroyed my rear carrier it was all wear on the inside of the case. I dont know what would be rubbing and grinding on the outside of the carrier but that does not look normal. You have to remember when buying discounted parts, you get what you pay for. Not talking down, i just always question and take caution when seeing something that should cost much more for so cheap

all the teeth on both the ring and pinion look very even and normal. no chips, chunks or pits.

and its cool, i understand what you mean about getting what you pay for. these were local on craigslist

Looks fine.

Maybe they grenaded a ring gear previously and chewed it up with the carrier? Then replaced the ring and ran it a while before selling the whole deal?

Looks normal. I never saw a one any different. They done give them a smooth finish because it's not required. If big hunks were missing I would think something exploded sometime ago.

They just took the casting imperfections or excess off.

Yep that is nothing more than taking the casting imperfections off. The carrier is made by using a sand casting. It leaves a really rough finish, but is cheap to manufacturer.
