Why are there 3 Cat's on my 2005?

And can you just get down to one Cat and just two O2 sensors or am I stuck with this setup?

No wonder this thing only gets 15 mpg going down hill with a sail up and the engine turned off................it can't breath.

Redsand 02-29-2012 07:22 PM

Thank California for that crap

Abnmarine 02-29-2012 07:22 PM

Doesn't the California models require to have 3 cats?

all 3 are required by law, since thats what was installed on your jeep.

the cats breath fine. if it gets 15mpg, then you have something else going on. keep up on maintenance, keep your foot off the throttle, drive like grandma, stay under 60mph, and keep it under 2500rpms whenever possible. I have all 3-cats, with over 85k miles on them, with 4.88s and 33s, and I can get 17-18mpg.

You have a 2005, 4.o liter with one Cat? How can that be, all the searching I did shows it needs / has three.

Did you modify........please tell me more.

whitejeep 02-29-2012 09:00 PM

I live in Texas and bought my Jeep in Texas. I noticed it had three cats when I put exhaust on it. My local exhaust guy told me it may of been a California Jeep.

kjeeper10 02-29-2012 09:07 PM

Some earlier TJ's have only 1 I believe

Emissions regulations get increasingly strick every year. As far as I know, 2000 was the last year you could get one cat, as a non-cali emissions package. All other 4.0L's after that will have 3 cats.

My 97 has one cat and 2 o2 sensors.

GoldenSahara00 02-29-2012 10:34 PM

I have two cats. Ones in my house and ones under my jeep. Sometimes they are both under my jeep.

jstone326 02-29-2012 10:39 PM

When I did my exhaust on my '05, I only noticed 1 cat... I think I would have noticed if there were 2 more. Get your build sheet from Jeep and see what is says... mine says "Federal Tier 2, Bin 9A Emissions" Maybe other people have a different emissions package... mine was purchase in NY
