other ways to check a CB function
I have got my CB installed and tuned, shot about 2.2ish across the channels with my SWR meter.
I can pick up some chatter here and there but have yet to get a good "radio check" back on ch 19
Could my CB be shot in the transmit mode? it was a used CB but the SWR's were good it seemed when tuned.
And how far out should I be expecting? 1/2 mile? 3 miles?
I was able to get loud and clear from another jeeper when I was initially tuning, be we were like 25 feet away at most.
Is there a way to check transmit other than OTR radio checks?
Also, my Cobra 19DX VI has a RF gain knob. It was described to me as RF gain is like how big of a tennis racket you have, Squelch is like how small (or big) the holes in the netting is. Is there a general theory as to how far out the RF is when all the way up vs. turned all the way down?
RF gain adjusts the RF amplification on the receive side. It's really not too much use on a CB. It is generally used for SWL to help eliminate noise and dig signals out of the background.
The method of useing it is; first find a channel in use, then turn RF gain all the way down, then volume all the way up. Start turning the RF gain up till you can hear those talking again. You should notice less hiss and background noise.
Squelch compleatly cuts the volume until a certain signal level is reached, then audio comes back.
If you are getting reading to check your SWR, then the transmitter is working. Usually an all or nothing situation.
Normal range 4 - 5 miles with a decent antenna.
A lot of people out there just won't answer a "radio check". Your a new guy, they don't want to talk to you. I don't know why, just the way it is. Best to have a buddy help you.
