Good deal or no?

I'm looking at a 2009 Rubicon Unlimited with 40xxx miles. It has navigation, manual transmission, and 12k of work into it-bumper, winch, springs, lift, 35" tires (which i would get rid of and go smaller), cage, etc. It's being listed for 28k, talked down to 25500 cash. The thing that worries me is maintenance. The previous owner used it as a play toy, it's beat up and has done a lot of wheeling. It has been driven through a good amount of water as well. Good deal or not? I really want the Rubicon but I'm scared it won't run very long.

hard to say without seeing it, i personally don't like buying other peoples projects. hell u can get a brand new sport for that price, its not a rubicon but building it is half the fun.

kbb shows it as being pretty close if not in your favor but I would probably not want something as your describing.

There's a picture....just questioning the reliability of some one else's play toy

I looked for a good used one and couldn't find one that wasn't ragged out. Bought new Rubicon in 2008 for $35,000. For that much money I would look at a new Sport.

Are you sure it's seen a lot of wheeling or are you assuming? Those chrome wheels look awfully shiny.

wgilbrech7 03-03-2012 02:13 PM

The bottom of it is pretty rusted and skid plates bent...any more opinions?

tabber02 03-03-2012 02:23 PM

i'm with daggo, doesn't look like that guy set that thing up to wheel it hard. just cause the skids have some dents in it.... he could have done that in a parking lot... :whistling:

my 0.02, if you have 25K in cash, walk to a dealership (with a tread lightly discount) and buy a new one. might not be able to get a Rubicon, but you'll have all the fun in the world making whatever you buy plenty capable.

and you'll have peace of mind, it will have only been yours... oh yeah, and a warranty.

Really. Go with the new Sport. Walk in with cash. And make a great deal.

Comes down to whether you really want a Rubicon or not. Does it look well maintained? Scratches in paint, seats/carpets dirty or ripped? Did he mention how often he changed the oil/conducted maintenance? People that put those kind of accessories on their vehicle generally care about the vehicle and take care of it. My 2012 showed up at the dealership with rust in a few places on the undercarriage--yep, I guess from the trip across the big pond. The dents in the skid plates could have come from 1 outing that involved rock crawling. Hard to say, but I would get a feel from the owner on these things AND consider the owner's age. It makes a difference.

Run away Fast!

All that glitters is not gold.

There are are just too many questions about the vehicle to which you cannot ever be sure of the answers. Also, you are going to instantly put another +/- $1800 worth of wheels and tires into it so you will have over $27K into it before tax, title and registration.

And who knows if the mods were done correctly?

Run...run...run. Buy a new one!
