front axle

so i went offroading today for the first time and my 4wd wont work. 4lo or 4hi... the drive shaft spins, but the tires wont... anybody have insight?

Zombiekiller 03-03-2012 08:36 PM

i just found a d44 front, with 3.07 gears, and passenger side drop for $100, id have to regear, but is this a good deal, and would it be worth it?

Depends on what the 44 is out of? Is it a full width axle is so its going to look a bit odd. Does it have locking hubs? My guess on your 4wd would be the vacuum motor.. You can fix this for about under 5bucks, buy locked the shift fork in place.

im sorry, im still rather green on 4wd, so im not sure if it does or does not, and ill post a link to the axle. but how would i fix it if what you said is the problem?

Jeep CJ / Wrangler parts wanted and for sale.

4Jeepn 03-04-2012 05:10 AM

Well if you have a stock yj front axle this 44 above will not work as you noted the drop is on the passenger side, YJ is on the drivers side.

For your 4wd issue, check this thread...

thanks! i think i will look into this either Wednesday or this weekend

Either one of your vacuum actuator vacuum lines are broken or your vacuum actuator itself is busted. The best option would be to go with a Posi-Lock cable (there's no sense in ditching your stock Dana 30 axle, it's MUCH stronger than the rear axle), but the least expensive would be to buy some vacuum tubing and splice up the vacuum tubing that's there. And if your vacuum actuator is busted, then you can find one for cheap on eBay since a lot of people get rid of them.

oh okay, i will wash the jeep off Wednesday, and i can look into this stuff then!

jr78racer 03-05-2012 12:14 AM

if your vacuum lines and actuator check out pull your actuator housing and check that the sleeve slides and that the shift fork isn't broken. mine was broke when i got it. its a common part, cherokees and grand cherokees have the same actuator so finding one should be pretty easy

Zombiekiller 03-05-2012 07:31 AM

Okay, I will pull it apart as soon as I get it cleaned up. I'm just happy it's a common problem and not something in the diff for certain

Zombiekiller 03-07-2012 07:31 AM

Alright I'm pulling it apart today! I'll let you know how it goes

Zombiekiller 03-10-2012 10:38 AM

Sorry I forgot to reply. I locked the shift fork in place on the front axle and now 4wd works fine! Thanks everyone
