Amps light

Ok I have a '74 CJ 5. And on the speedometer there is a red light that has "amps" on it and it's lit up? What does that mean? I just replaced the alternator bc that was bad.

You should start by checking all your grounds. Did you disconnect the battery when you installed the new Alt.? thinking you may have shorted something and checking your fuse's is another idea. Can be a little time consuming my 74 had all inline fuse's. God I miss my 74..

The amps light only comes on when I have the lights on now.

I would do a test using a volt meter. Find any positive (HOT) wire as a source and a ground, run the RPMs up to 1,800 to 2,000 and see what the alternator is producing. It should be about 14 volts
