Ideas for re-purposing the rear bumper

So, I just replaced my stock rear bumper (2000 TJ) and started thinking...

I can't imagine anyone buying a stock bumper so these things are either filling up landfills, garage corners, scrap piles, or they have been re-engineered into something new.

What things have you done, or would you do, with the stock bumper?

Thanks

Take off the plastic end caps and make like a stubby bumper. I did that before I got my tire carrier and was very pleased with how it looked.....

You could get a hi lift jack out and bolt it to the rear bumper.....

Just a couple random options you could do with it

And people still do actually seem to buy stock bumpers. If you wanted to sell it you could try throwing it up on CL for like $20 and have it gone pretty quick

As a blacksmith I use the metal in different blades and suchness.

I gave mine away when I sold my wheels...told him to feel free to clean it up, modify it, resell it or whatever he wanted to do. People will get one if they're in a fender bender and just want a cheap/stock replacement.

I have used my old yj bumper for all kinds of little projects.....nothing memorable but it comes in handy.

I agree, there is probably a buyer out there, for the right price. I actually been watching for a local set cheap/free for my LJ just so I can do some mods to them and swap em if I like the outcome.....

Glad I kept mine - bought another Jeep so I'm pulling aftermarket bumper off and putting stock bumper back on to sell

Since I switched my spare to the inside of the tub don't like need/ spare tire carrier and am debating what to put on the back end.....If I could find a decent stock bumper easily would use it. But to lazy to look will probably just order one.

If I can't find someone who will want mine I will take them down to the local scrap metel recycler. They may come back as a rice rocket?

Gave mine to the local 4x4 shop. They sometimes work on restorations and may use it down the line. In fact that's where most of my old stuff goes. You may find an auto body shop that can use it.

I used mine as wall art for the man cave garage by putting it beneath the CJ front end already hanging up!!

Wall art

I kinda like that idea. Maybe in the garage...

If I remember correctly, on one of the jeep forums a guy built a radiator skidplate from a factory TJ bumper. I would think you could fab up a steering skid also.

Here's a stock bumper after a $30 trip to Tractor Supply for parts and some fun with a welder. The trailer hitch is just for my basket carrier that holds a cooler and such. You can see I just had to re-weld it (put a little too much weight on it:redface:).

There is no way I would trust the stock bumper with a hitch and drings.

BeerMan 03-07-2012 08:48 PM

I don't tow with it as I said. Actually the d-rings are welded through to plates and have been through major Hell. I figured the entire bumper would have snapped by now but no such luck. I'm not defending that its not a bit of redneck engineering but it suits my purpose just fine.
