Which would you pick, 2011 JKUR or 2012 JKU Sport?

Total noob, first post.

Looking to finally be able to pull the trigger next weekend. Ideally we will be able to swing a 2012 JKUR but if we need to step down in price a bit would you choose a new 2011 Rubicon with the old engine or a 2012 Sport?

I am expecting this to be a vehicle we keep long term and once it has lost that 'new car' smell it should see some decent wheeling.

OutlawJK 03-07-2012 05:12 PM

go for the 12:thumb:

pdubois64 03-07-2012 05:13 PM

12,12,12

Can you cite or link those studies?

Jsjk 03-07-2012 05:20 PM

012 no question

jkjeeper06 03-07-2012 05:23 PM

The rubicon will be better stock off road but if you plan to lift it anyway then you can alway build up a sport to be just as competent off road as the rubicon. Having the 3.6 would be very nice but unfortunately there have been several reported problems with them ticking

CrazyBull 03-07-2012 05:23 PM

I have the 12 Rubi with a stick. Very happy with it especially after mods. The engine does make a big difference having driven both.

I did have a small transmission problem but no engine problems and my 2011 Chrysler 200 has the same engine and they run awesomely. The 200 will fly over a 110 without you even noticing it as it is so smooth.

Skwat, with those choices I would go with the Unlimited regardless of being a 2011 or 2012. That is because of me wanting the 4 door over the 2 door Jeep.

I have a 2007 JKUS and a 2012 JKUS (this next will get me banned form the 2012 forums) and I love (really LOVE) them both equally for different reasons.

I bought new and still have a 1978 CJ-7 so I have done my time in a 2 door Jeep and am as qualified as anyone on the forum to give may experienced opinion which is go with the Unlimited!

XJ Knight 03-07-2012 05:31 PM

I'd lean twoards the 12.. I prefer the wrangler in the 2 dr version but it's merely a what do you need for your situation kind of thing..

lol...I'm sure there's been tons of "studies" done. Probably the Consumer Reports article.

XJ Knight 03-07-2012 05:36 PM

Not sure what your budget is but fwiw i've seen 2012 JK Rubicons floating around on cars.com and such for around 30K

CrazyBull 03-07-2012 05:37 PM

The unlimited is nice for carrying capacity. Plus if I'm loning it I don't have to pitch a tent. A twin air mattress will fit inside for camping purposes. When on a long trip I have the cargo space for the missus and I and dogs. No cramping up or sticking stuff on the roof our rear cargo rack I only use for the trikes. Two doors are fine but if I'm travelling..I'm TRAVELLING with cargo.

Drove both, had a great deal for the '11 but liked the '12 better so I bought it. Both great Jeeps, good problem to have...

Wow, amazing number of replies in such a short time, thanks!

For sure going with the unlimited and unless it was a crazy deal on a new 2011 Rubicon I am pretty sure we will stick with the 2012 either sport or Rubicon as the budget allows. Driven both 11's and 12's and can certainly feel the difference.

How has your experience been on trade-in value when using the tread lightly discount? I am thinking I need to get the trade-in value locked down first to avoid potential lowball offers on the trade.

You bit the bait Bill :)

I seriously doubt there is any "legitimate" study that found the 2012 any worse than the 2007 or the first year TJ, YJ or CJ.

No, I didn't bite.... I just played out enough rope to hang himself with... I don't think we'll be seeing any actual citations of studies that a "buddy was telling [him] he seen [sic]"... :D

wanderer 03-07-2012 05:53 PM

they all have problems 07-12 but I would go for the 12 more power,,,,, uggghhhhh

pdubois64 03-07-2012 05:57 PM

40% more power, 10% more torque, nuff said. At least the '11 has the new interior. I'd consider the '11 Rubi if it was the same price as the '12 Sport. They should be giving '11's away at this point.

SandDevil93 03-07-2012 06:24 PM

2012

:)

JIMBOX 03-07-2012 06:28 PM

:whistling: If they were both sports, I'd take the 2012, but

I'd take an '11 Rubi over a '12 sport anytime !

:dance::rofl: JIMBO

SilverSport 03-07-2012 06:32 PM

2011 JKUR FTW! :thumb:

jp2611 03-07-2012 06:36 PM

I have a '12 Sport....I could have gotten a Rubi, but for me, I know I don't need the options it has. Lockers, quick disco's etc.

Now if you want that just because it is a Rubi that is fine, but I know I would be wasting money buying a Rubi.

I drove a 2011 Sport last summer, and not being harsh, but there is a big difference driving on the street between the '11 and the '12. Best question is to ask yourself what do you need? than what do want?

agenbro 03-07-2012 06:51 PM

Historically the first model year of a new engine, body style, drive train, etc. has the most problems right? I would opt for the 11 Rubi. If you want more power, just regear and voila... you have more power... well not really but it sure makes it drive a heck of a lot better, especially off road. And well you know you are going to put tires, rims etc on and the Rubi already has 4.10 gears for when you upgrade to bigger tires it wont be so bad... Just my opinion... I have an 08 Sahara that had 3.21 gears and 6sp tranny. Upgraded to 4.88 gears and LOVE it.

holyjeepers 03-07-2012 06:57 PM

I went with 2012 JKU Rubicon

have they figured out the rolling codes thing yet for the 2011's?

pdubois64 03-07-2012 07:02 PM

I wouldn't worry about the new engine. It's been around since 2010 and was included in Ward's Best 10 Engines for 2010.
