Stopped running

Ok so I was going down the road in my beautiful YJ and then all of a sudden my car turned off? I tried to start it back up but it just wasn't working! So I got it towed to my house anyone know what might have failed me? I I think it might have to be something to do with the alternator? Any other Ideas would help thanks! :)

Did your lights slowly go dim, and now it won't even turn over, like the battery is dead?

Well it wasn't at night so I didn't have my lights on but it won't turn over yet I still have power to my radio and interior lights..

Turn on your headlights and see if they are either dim or go dim quickly! Usually when the alternator dies, the Jeep then depends on the battery for the power, so it eventually drains it dead, or to the point that the vehicle can't continue to keep running. Because the radio and interior lights have little draw, they may work for some time after the Jeep motor has gone dead. When you turn it over does the radio or lights turn off?

It won't turn over in the first place and my lights stay on for quite a while they didn't go dim at all

The easy way to tell if it's the alternator is:

1. Charge the battery (preferably by charger, but a jump start will work too).

2. Once you get the Jeep running, carefully loosen the positive cable (don't short the wrench to the body).

3. Pull the positive cable off the battery terminal.

If the engine dies, it's probably your alternator.

Or, you can remove the alternator and take it to a parts store and they can check it for you.

Does it crank at all, like it's trying to start?

Ignition control module

So turning the key does nothing at all, correct? Lights don't even dim when trying to start it? Engine doesn't attempt to start?
