is the d30 in the front of a 99 tj a full floater???? i need to know this because my buddy snaped one of his half shafts today and when we went to get a new one we decided to ditch the d30 and go to a d44. we dont want to put any more money into the d30 but the d44 is goint to be almost 2 weeks to have shiped here. back to my question... can i pull both half shafts and remove the drive shaft and just drive it in 2wd? im keeping the d30 and i dont want to hurt the diff since its a ARB and almost new. i know the fluid can come out of the housing with the axle out thats why i will remove the driveshaft, no movement of the diff. i know the d30 has a hub that bolts onto the end of the half shaft that has its own bearing and "shouldnt" have any weight supported by the half shaft. i have done this before with d44s and d60s but never with a d30 and never for 2 weeks, normaly just to get out of a trail. my buddy has to drive his rig to work, 50 miles round trip, until i get the new axle in. i plan on just plugging the end of the axle to keep out dirt and water and keep most of the oil in. what do you guys say?

For some reason, I want to say you need to have the shaft in there, but can't recall why.

You can remove the inner axleshafts but the outer stub axleshafts must be left in place to hold the unit bearing hub together. :)
