2012 Sahara Unlimited

Please help!! I have a 2012 Wrangler Sahara Unlimited.....I'd like to install the rubicon tires and aftermarket XD rims. I know the tires won't stick out like i would like them to so what are my options? I heard wheel spacers are not good if the tire is heavy because it's bad for the axels. If the spacers are ok what size spacers should I get? I'd like the tires to stick out noticeably . Thanks!!!

Check your local state laws. In many it is illegal for the tires to stick out past the fenders.

Wheels with 4.5 or less of backspacing will
push them out.

Better off buying a new tire/wheel combo if you want to save money :)

Some guy has a set of 2009 Rubicon tires with like 10k he's selling for $600 and the XD rims I want are like $175 a piece. For a total of $1600 for tires, rims, mounted and balanced. I don't think I'll find tires&rims packages cheaper if I buy the tires new. As for the back spacing I'm not sure but the rims I want are the 17" XD Hoss in gloss black. Thanks guys!!!

Oh, you can definitely get cheaper than that. That price for Rubi tires only is a little high as well.

FWIW, I got my 16" wheels and 33" tires mounted, balanced, shipped, with lugs and replacement certificates for $1580.

I painted my stock Sahara wheels, put on Spidertrax wheel spacers, and 33" Duratracs.

A quality spacer like Spiderstrax is hub centric and as long as you torque them to spec it is no different than putting on a new wheel with less back spacing. It doesn't matter if its a wheel or a wheel spacer that is moving your backspacing its the same amount of stress on the axle.

You've got this all goofed up. Look at this write-up and educate yourself about wheel fitment, backspacing, and the like.

Stock wheels have a backspacing of about 6.25". I'm not familiar with XD wheels specifically, but I'd expect they'd have a backspacing more in the neighborhood of 4.5" or less. The result will be that the new wheels will sit FARTHER OUT from the jeep and any tire you put on will be carried outward with it.

So yes, stock Rubicon tires will stick out further with XD wheels than they did on the stock wheels. You could also get fatter tires that would stick out more. No spacers needed.

You're planning on spending more than necessary though, I can tell you that. Here's what I did for new wheels AND new tires, for about $1200. If I sell my old wheels, I'll net out under $1000.

Good breakdown by MTH. $1600 is way too much money for used 32” tires and new wheels. I can probably find a 35” tire and wheel package for that. As for spacers, you can safely run them but stay away from bargain brands like Rough Country. There are TONS of JK’s, moderate builds to fully built, running spacers. Look at Spidertrax 1.5” spacers 5x5 bolt pattern, Teraflex 1.25” and Synergy 1.75” spacers. All 5x5 bolt pattern. As mentioned though make sure you buy the right backspacing on the wheels and it will give you the look you are looking for.

Wow all these measurements for back spacing, lifts, etc is confusing!! :-) would you guys mind telling me how much it would cost to buy bigger than the Rubicon tires with a set of rims e.g. The XD boss wheels in maybe a smaller size --- perhaps a 15" or 16"? Will I need to lift the jeep? I'd love to lift it even though I don't plan on ever off-roading. I just love the look of a wrangler with big knobby tires and a nice set of black gloss or flat finish wheels. Thanks for all your input guys!! Really appreciate it. I'm new to the jeep world so forgive my ignorance.

Click the link I provided above showing what I did. That'd be a start and will answer a lot of your questions. :thumb:
