door lock jammed can't open door
 
2006 Rubicon Unlimited
wife's jeep passenger door lock jammed- can't open door-from inside or outside with or without key-I will remove panel and lube everything up if I can find a way to get door open
can you somehow unlatch the door from the inside? tried pounding on door to try and free up mechanism but didn't work- purchased door clip removel tool from Autozone so I'm ready to get inside if I can get door open
any advice?

Mine does that on the driver side. I just put my shoulder right under the door latch drive in and up at the same time with lots of pressure while turning the key and it usually unlocks. I quit locking my doors cause I got tired of fighting with it.

I wound up cutting the catch loop off with a sawsall. It was actually a very simple job and there was no paint damage. That was after trying every in my arsenal

It sounds like the linkage rods have become disconected. From the inside take off the door handle, ( c - clip ) take off the pull handle then starting at the bottom edge of the door closest to the hinges, you will need to pull the panel inward to take it off. Then it will lift up and over the window ledge. now you should be able to see the lock mechanism. You can figure it out from there. Replacement clips for the rods and soor panel are available at most auto part stores.

My '97 does that sometimes on the passenger side. It gets stuck and when you try to unlock it from inside you feel it spring back to the lock position and never pop over to unlocked. It only happens if someone tries to open the door from outside while it is locked. If I unlock it first it never happens.

On mine if I pull the inside handle all the way out and then let it snap back hard 3 or 4 times it will unlock. It only works from inside.

I had to saw mine too....did from inside with hacksaw blade by hand...took an hour....dealer had new latch loop next day.

I tried every frigging trick ever posted on ALL forums, and ended up having to saw it open.

Once door was open I ordered a new latch and installed it...wasn't cheap, but it's fixed....

This is a common problem with Wranglers....folks get locked in/out on regular basis.

Remove latch from inside door(remove window first) Lube the crap out of it with white lithum spray grease and make sure to lube inside latch with spray can hose...If you have TJ and it ain't happened yet, it will.

I made a pretty extensive post about this exact problem-

The short answer is that the door handle rod is not returning far enough for the locking pin to seat into place. Because of the design, if the rod is being pulled on even a fraction of an inch (or even just has a tiny TINY bit too much tension) the small pin that allows the door to be "unlocked" will not fall into place.

Same deal here. I tried everything in the book also and as you probably learned, it ain't easy getting the door panel off with the door closed.

solved. Solved. SOLVED: thanks a lot to netlohcs and to B-Radley,

here is the synthesis of the whole thing: there is a very long V-shape link that goes from the outside door handle all the w-a-y down around the door glass mechanism and then back up to the latch.

With age this link tends to stick half-way i.e. in "half-pulled handle" position. Once so stuck, you will have that 'spring-back' effect on your door key (from outside) and on your inside lock button.

The first remedy seems to bang this link by pulling inside or outside handle all the way you can and letting it shoot back.*

Once you remove the door lining**:
1 - identify the V-link (it's the only one that goes all the way to the door bottom and the one that moves when you pull the outside handle.
netlohcs proposed to bend it, but it is really good as it is, just sticking.
Therefore instead of bending we gonna lube it thoroughly:
2 - note that the V-link has one guiding point at the very bottom of the door. Possibly that is the point where it actually sticks. Lube it there.
3 - lube pivots at either end i.e. at the outside door handle side and at the latch side. I simply used wd40.
4 - you will now feel the long-forgotten "brand-new" ease of operating the handle with a force of a baby's finger.

*if you could not get the door open in the first place, try a 'surgical operation' by making a small hole in the lining in the latch area, stick in your wd40 straw and spray spray spray rather than cutting any metal parts.

** Your glass driving handle is kept in place by a locking ring (aka 'Jesus ring'). Use some sort of a hook to pull it out, and your handle will be released. Other fixing points are screws on the perimeter and on the inside grab handle and on the inside lock unit, then clips, and then you force the lining up and back from the glass slot.
