Question about transmission mount,
I was under my 93 yj today inspecting a bad rear driveshaft u joint and noticed that the transmission slides back and forth easier than it seems like it should,,, it's the part just above my poly transmission mount, I noticed that there are holes that seem like they would attach this to the transmission itself, should there be bolts there that maybe fell off? Hope this is clear enough

Do you see your tranny mount.

I don't have a tranny mount on mine and I have no issues.

Ha, I went out and reached my phone above the skid plate to take a pic of it to show you what I'm talking about and think I answered my own question cause when I looked at the pic I saw a bolt jut hangin out.....

The red (now red and black) thing is obviously my poly trans mount... The question I had was if the black part above the red poly mount was supposed to bolt in to the trans itself, I guess that's the bolt that should be there eh? And maybe the extra shake caused my u joint to fail? Am I correct in this diagnosis? Thanks dudes

Yes same thing happened to me I have a 4.0 i don't know what the parts called but it is supposed to bolt to your tranny

Did it make it shake pretty good when accelerating or going up hill?

Yes and Yes...those are the bolts that should be in the tranny mount, and likely the tranny moving around could definitely cause the u-joint problem. When you put the bolts back in, I'd recommend using lock washers to keep it tight. It looks like there is only a flat washer currently.

Lock washer for sure. My AX5 has a stripped bolt hole and only has one bolt holding it to the poly mount, after the original 2 bolts fell out or got yanked out. FORTUNATELY whenever I go and buy bolts like this I won't buy anything less than a Grade 8.

A grade 8 and a lock washer are all that's keeping my tranny from moving side to side. I did happen to check it a couple months after I put it in, still tight :thumb:

Would the local true value carry the grade 8? Or is it a specialty auto thing?

your hardware store should have it. this seems to be somewhat common issue. i've heard of it happening before. happened to me as well and caused my ujoint to go bad

Yea the shake is getting pretty bad so I figure I better fix it before something else breaks, I just hope the threads inside are still ok!

So I replaced those bolts with 8 grade and locking washers, now when I drive it I am getting this crazy and scary clunking sound ! What could this be? Im thinking that now that the transmission is more secured to the skid plate that the dying u joint is able to move more causing this clunking sound? Sounds like something's gonna explode!

yes, replace the u-joint asap before it explodes on you, can cause much more damage.

easy check, grab drive shaft on each side of joint, wiggle opposite directions of each other. if there's free play, its bad. but what you described is literally the exact situation i had

Yea doin it this week, how tough is it to get the old one out? Would a hammer, sockets and a c clamp do the trick?

My old 4.0 had a bad tranny mount just ordered a new poly mount and it made a hell of a difference. I was getting alot of whacking under torque.

The tranny mount itself is good, after market poly mount which is perfectly in tact, it was the part above it that screws in to the trans itself that the bolts fall outof! That is good now, the drive shaft u joints are the prob now! As long as its ready to go for the summer!

was under jeep today and the damn bolts fell out again??!!! any ideas a to how to get these to stay? theres a lot of grease under there, would that prevent some kind of lock tight from working?

Try blue locktight spray brake cleaner to clean the gram

x-2, all the locktite in the world is not going to work if the threads are dirty. Take the whole bracket off and clean out the thread holes and clean the bolts, lock tite the bolts with red (that's if you don't want to remove them anytime soon)
