YJ vs TJ
I am sure this post has been made a thousand times. But I am looking to purchase a Wrangler in the near future (tax return). From the beginning I have been looking at YJ's, but now as time draws closer I have been second guessing my self and considering TJ's.

So my question as a 1st time jeep owner, what do you guys recommend an YJ vs TJ.

First of all, my original idea was to purchase a YJ, replace the dash with a metal flat dash or DD Fab Dash. A lot of the TJ dashes have a cheap plastic look to me (just an opinion). Replace the yj headlights with the tj lights (saw conversion online). Rhino line the interior, replace all the seat, wheel/rims, etc. I have look online haven't seen any aftermarket/custom dashes for the TJ. But at the end of the day, the tj has a slightly more modern exterior look, which i like.

Based on all my bs above, what would you all recommend and why.

Thanks allot guys

Having had both, I think I have a valid opinion. Your end-goal will choose the right Jeep for you. If you're into rock crawling and need something with huge amounts of flex, then the TJ will probably be the way to go. If you're looking for something to drive on a daily basis and will use it with family members, the TJ will probably be the way to go. A stock TJ rides better than a stock YJ, IMO. If you're wanting something middle of the road, build wise, then go with the YJ. They're somewhat cheaper to mod, and you don't feel so bad about hacking holes in the tub for LED lights, armor, etc...

I loved my TJ, but it was time to move on to another build.
I love my YJ and plan on enjoying it for a good while. (Especially once it looks like a CJ)
Go test drive a few of each. One will stand out and grab your heartstrings. Go with that one. :thumb:

I live in Miami, so there won't be any rock crawling, just light off-roading/mudding. Mainly just city driving. Either YJ or TJ, I want to put half doors and a bikini top.

Mainly city driving? Get the TJ. Having driven both the TJ is much smoother on the street. If you don't plan on spending alot on mods then it should work too since TJ builds are more expensive than YJ builds.

Go with the YJ square headlights are better

I love my YJ but for mostly city driving go with a TJ as said before, much smoother ride. The seats are more comfortable too! :D Welcome to WF!

I hear you guys and agree about the TJ, but its hard to give up the idea of having a metal dash like this, in a YJ. Has anyone replaced the dash in a TJ???

YJ's are flat spring suspension, TJ's are coil spring suspension. I have had both-sold the YJ a year ago. On the trails it was great, lighter than the TJ, little bit smaller...but my rubicon was 10 years newer so we kept that. On the road, like others have said-the TJ was far more comfortable.

I own a YJ so im biased... but its got the "old jeep" look and sound, a bare bones vehicle, easy to work on, true offroad mule, practically a 4wheeler you can drive on the road. Yeah I love 'em.

Another company makes a metal dash that isnt as boxy, and seems alittle more clean(my .02) I have driven both vehicles and love them both, but I like that my YJ stands out alittle more than other Jeeps, I can drive from my house to San Antonio and see about 20 or more tjs but maybe like 3 or 4 yjs, their not that common anymore
