Anyone know what this is??

On 2012 jkr (which i just picked up) In the EVIC, when the compass/temp is displayed (right in the middle between the compass direction and the temp shown) there is a blinking display as follows:

C
R
L

This blinks off and on (like the 12:00 on an unprogrammed VCR). I've read the owner's manual (maybe not carefully enough....) but can't seem to find out what this is. It's somewhat annoying, but more importantly I want to make sure I know what it is- and that nothing's wrong.

Does anyone know what this is?? Thanks

Center, right, left?

Something for calibrating the compass?

No idea...my compass was calibrated by the dealer before I picked my Jeep up, and I've never seen that display.

I believe what you are seeing actually says CAL, not CRL. This was taken from an excerpt from a 2008 owners manual. I'm sure there is more info in your owners manual.
"The self-calibrating feature of the compass eliminates the
need to calibrate the compass for normal conditions.
During a short initial period, the compass may appear
erratic and the CAL symbol will appear (blinking) on the
display. After the vehicle has completed at least one
complete circle under 5 mph (8 km/h) in an area free
from large metal objects, calibration will be complete
when the CAL symbol is extinguished.
After initial calibration, the compass will continue to
automatically update this calibration whenever the vehicle
is in motion."

And found this on some website. Don't have my owners manual handy or I would look to make sure nothing has changed.
NOTE: Do not attempt to calibrate the compass near large metal objects such as other vehicles, large buildings, or bridges; or, near overhead or underground power lines.
1. Start the engine but leave the vehicle in “PARK” .
2. Depress the STEP button for approximately 10 seconds until the “VAR” menu is displayed. The current variance value will also be displayed.
3. Once in the “VAR” menu depress the STEP button for approximately 10 seconds until the “CAL” message is displayed solidly not blinking.
4. To complete the compass calibration, drive the vehicle in one or more complete 360 degree circles under 5 mph (8 km/h) in an area free of large metal objects such as other vehicles, large buildings, or bridges; or, near overhead or underground power lines, until the “CAL” indicator turns off. The compass will now function normally.

Yes, get to a parking lot somewhere and do a few slow circles....it will then calibrate and go away. Also check the owners manual and see what region you are in and set to the correct one in the EVIC menu (do this first).

What is Compass Short hand?

Thanks! I bet you're both right on this. There are directions for calibrating the compass but I didn't see anything about that indicator. I already re-set the adjustment for MA but didn't drive in a circle. Something to do on the way to work tomorrow!

Thanks again for your help!

That will do it. I was thinking it would eventually calibrate on it's own but after about 2 weeks I did the circles and it was gone.
