Stripped Bolts

I stripped the bolts that my mirrors are being mounted by. The torx are such a pain. Anyone know the size of bolt I should get to just replace them all and make life a lot simpler when I need to take the mirrors off

I took mine to Fastenal and found SS replacements CHEAP that are stronger and have allen heads. Have fun drilling that torx out...I about lost my mind on mine:banghead:

I will post the size if i can find the bag.

5/16-18 and avoid Allen head if possible. Flat head #4 Phillips is a vastly superior drive in flat head due to the much larger size of the contact area and the driver itself.

If you get stainless, test a couple before you get carried away. It is not all created equal and a lot of it is very soft.

This. Most "average" stainless fasteners aren't real strong, like Gr. 2-ish. At the very least, use anti-seize compound on the threads, because they tend to gall. Don't get me wrong, stainless bolts have their place, just be careful.

This is why I'm replacing all of my bolts with zinc coated Grade 8s.

If you have a source for 5/16-18 FH Phillips drive, grade 8 in 3/4 and 1" lengths, we can use a few thousand of them.

eBay, surprisingly. I just bought one of these sets two weeks ago. Way more stuff than I needed but I'll have plenty for future projects:

GRADE 8 NUT BOLT & WASHER ASSORTMENT KIT SCREWS 1000 PC | eBay

Not phillips drive, but I prefer the bolt-style heads anyway.

No, not hex head cap screws, we have good sources for those. I need high quality Flat Head Phillips 5/6-18 x 3/4 and 1" in length with a zinc or cadmium finish gold or clear, in high strength in large quantities to replace our more expensive high quality S/S.

Our S/S is good enough that you can snap a good quality #4 Phillips socket off in them and the steel versions just strip out. Unfortunately, that comes at a very high cost.

I also need 1/2-13 Flat Head Allen drive in 1.75" length, decently cost effective 2-500 at a time. The ones we can currently purchase are not the high strength versions like the metric Class 12.9 equivalents we use for the belly skid fasteners.
