Yj vs. Tj

I'm going off to college here pretty soon and am a little worried at the reliability of the YJ but I still love jeeps with all my being. Now if I know there are die hard YJ guys and die hard TJ guys but I am looking at reliability. I have a feeling that the TJ will be the more reliable but I just want some outside opinions. No matter what I get I want a manual and no 4 bangers only 6+ cylinders.

Depends on what you plan on doing with your jeep. I will never get a tj. I want to get a cj7.

I wouldn't kick a 4 cylinder TJ.. I prefer my 4 over the 6 (and yes I've owned both) there just as good off road there great on gas and there not slow dogs like everyone makes them out to be (had a guy in an I6 pull up next to me today and asked If i had a V8 in it because he couldn't keep up with me on a back road His was all stock and mine is slightly lifted on 33's

Now as for the TJ aspect I've owned to of them and loved them both.. my 1st one was the I6.. I couldn't hold onto it because it was my daily and had to be filled up every day 6 in lift on 35's I had to fight with it to hold 60MPH on the highway and and it killed me on gas... But it was unstoppable off road. i remember i made it through death trench in limrick PA and I'm the only one with recorded proof at that spot to ever do it at its worst. Now i have a 2000 4 banger and Not only is it piratical to drive everyday its much less costly.. Its not as much of a monster off road but i still show up just about everyone else who shows up at the local pit.

Its all about what you want but I wouldn't kick a 4 banger until You have tried it I thought i was going to hate it but I was wrong.. The only down side to them is highway driving.. every hill you lose speed on but if you can deal with that there great.

They are both reliable. The yj is nice because there is less to go wrong. The yj is much smother of a ride. And the 4 banger is a good motor, very reliable and I have jammed past my friend with a 6 cyl tj.

I had a '95 YJ with the 4 banger. 3 inch body lift, 1.25 inch shackle lift with 33x9.5 mudders. It was great but fifth gear was not going to happen except down a long steep hill. My ex killed it so I never got a chance to see to the axles. It was a great daily driver.

I currently have a '04 TJ with the I6. I love it so far. smoother ride than the YJ. With 31s under her I just got back from a 60 mile run through the woods and averaged 20MPG. I was happy.
