Tuffy Tailgate Security Products

After reading lots of stories on scumbags zipping off windows or worse yet cutting them to take things from the back of a jeep I saw recommendations for Tuffy products. The product line for the rear enclosure seems great with the lockable tailgate but what I don't understand is if they cut or zip out the window cant they just unlock the rear gate by hitting the unlock button on the door? $199 is a good price point for peace of mind so I hope i am missing something!

The power lock buttons go dead after a short period of time. I want to say 30 seconds after the Jeep is locked.

Leave a window down, lock the Jeep with the remote, wait a minute or so, then try the lock button to convince yourself it works. :)

i will try that this morning! I just had the Jeep delivered yesterday so I am learning all about the nuances of it!

^^^This. It's 16 seconds. And if you've got doors/roof off and have your tailgate locked, you can only unlock it with your key.

Worked like a charm!

Thanks!

It won't unlock if you hit the unlock button the remote? you have to manually use the key to open it?

I was wondering about this.

Normally, the first click unlocks the drivers side door and the second click (if you do this real quick, like within 5 seconds) unlocks the rest of the doors including the tailgate. (At least this is how it works on my jeep with the top on).

I would assume that it would work the same way with the top and doors off.

Your locks disable after 16 seconds, and can't be operated till you unlock em again with the key fob.

On mine, with doors/roof of, if the tailgate is locked (or if I lock it as I'm walking away from the Jeep), after 16 secs you can't unlock the tailgate except with the key fob.

That always drove me nuts. So I did the little remote dance (can be found in owners manual) so that a single click of the unlock button will unlock ALL doors. :thumb:

Press and hold the Lock button on the fob for at least 5 seconds, but no more than 10. While still holding the Lock button, press and hold the Unlock button. Release both and test.

Nice to know - Thanks.

I may not do it though. I kind of like the feature where you only unlock the drivers door first. I have the exact same feature on my other vehicles too.

It's a safety/security feature to only unlock the driver's door first. I would NOT disable it.

I have a 9mm for safety...

I turned it off cause I was more concerned about convenience. :thumb:

Well, I carry too but would rather avoid a car jack confrontation. If my wife drives it, she could easily be a victim. Just sayin'...:wavey:

My wife doesn't drive it. The only place I drive at night is to a State Prison parking lot - again, not a problem. I don't live in New York City. This is a rural area... To each their own. ;)
