Looking at a YJ today

Like the title says I may be looking at a YJ today. Is there anything I should be on the lookout for? I believe its an 89 or 90.

Some pics he sent me already.

Check the frame and body for rust. Your going to get some no matter what on a YJ but too much is just too much. Pull the carpeting and look at the bed if you can.

Pulling the carpet is a great idea. Also, try pulling the carpet in the driver and passenger area as well. I knew a guy who pulled his carpet back after the bought it and found a 6 inch hole of rust through the floor boards. I would also make sure that the frame is still in alignment. Find out as much as you can about any mods that the PO did. This will help you diagnose problems in the future...and there will be problems. Make sure the hard-top does not leak. Of course ask if it burns oil or tranny fluid. This is by no means an exhaustive list. Good luck and enjoy the ride. Just to warn you, you will learn/make-up new cuss words along the way.

What do u plan on doing with it, and how much are u paying for it. I live in CO , and see a few on CL for around 4-5K in pretty good shape. If he's selling it cheap, you may have a long journey ahead of you, unless you are building a rock n' roll rig :)

Rust is the big one (unless its a 95 and has a totally galvanized frame/body ;)). If its still got carpet pull it up on the floorpans in front and on the wheel wells, those are the most common rust points. Check the bottom of the engine bay for fluids, as people with leaks usually only think to clean what you can see looking down with the hood up. When you test it, be sure to put it in 4H/4L and crawl around a little. Other than that, just use common sense and don't get talked into buying a POS just because you really really want it.

With all the rust in mind also check the fluid levels as this can tell you about the maitnence that it may be lacking. Oil, coolant , air filter , plugs, etc. if you have access to a obd 1 code reader . Bring it with.

You don't need a code reader, just turn the key from off to on three times, the CEL will flash your codes.

Just pull the carpet up and look for rust. This is what it shouldn't be!

One place to look for rust is behind the seatbelt mount where the rear floorpan ends, at the point there the rollbar bolts down. I knew about the front floorpans but not this area when i got my YJ and both sides are rotted through. This is from the hardtop leaking from what I can tell.
