Won't be doing the Rampart any time soon

Conditions vary from passable to bad to " Oh crap, am I going to get out of here alive?" Took me over an hour to get through two miles of seven foot shelf road with two feet of loose snow on it. Gouged up my windshield frame when I slid into a rock. Got stuck at least four times before I got out of that bloody canyon. I'll go back up and check it out again long about June or July. That was so not fun...

Colo-TJ 03-19-2012 05:31 PM

you know you shouldn't be alone when checking those trails buddy!!!:whistling:

Colo-TJ 03-19-2012 05:33 PM

Well, stupid as it sounds that's what I went up there for. Conditions were tolerable until I got into that bloody canyon, and then it turned to shit really fast. Trouble is once you're in that canyon there's no turning back, you can't even turn around safely in the summer, much less when there's that much snow.

Illinois Gulch is a nasty little trail in the summer, add in ice and snow and it would be impassable. All of the trails in the Rainbow Falls area are tough in the winter. There is a lot of icing from all the ATV's and dirt bikes. Plus said OHV's drive like idiots in there. I only do that area in the summer during the week when the weather is crappy.

Wildcat Canyon would be doable but not by novices. I wouldn't even consider a fun run out there.

About all that's left would be another run in the Manchester Creek area. I just can't thing of anything else that would be safe in the winter.

I should have known...

Justin04Lj 03-19-2012 06:47 PM

Mt.baldy was a little icy in the beginning but after the mud pits was impassable. Too bad old stage is so bumpy.

brendend 03-19-2012 09:43 PM

old stage is boring, at least for me. i do know of one trail that went out through the mts that Ive only been about 10 miles down and it kept going. heading back to that trail isn't hard and there's a little mud area that's fun to play in for a little.

YJ325i 03-19-2012 09:44 PM

I did mostly Rampart last July and Aug, and some in Sept. was really looking forward to going back, but sounds like it will be awhile. Lots more to explore then in other areas.

brendend 03-19-2012 09:45 PM

o i also picked up a trail book from predator today, ill give it a look over and let you know my ideas

Justin04Lj 03-19-2012 09:48 PM

I have at least 10 trails that are marked in my book that I'm really trying to do this year

brendend 03-19-2012 09:55 PM

long hollow rd to illinois gluch trail? long hollow is rated a 3 and gluch a 4. only about 10 miles though

Justin04Lj 03-19-2012 09:57 PM

Long hollow/dakan road is fun. Not too challenging. Havent done the gulch.

brendend 03-19-2012 10:00 PM

id personally like to do something a little challenging. i wanna test this new lift i pieced together :)

Colo-TJ 03-19-2012 10:02 PM

Illinois Gulch is rated up to a 6.. must be some obstacles along the way

brendend 03-19-2012 10:13 PM

i was going by the book we picked up today, just looked and it was written in 09 so im sure stuffs changed and it dosent account for seasonal conditions

Colo-TJ 03-19-2012 10:19 PM

TrailDamage.com - Illinois Gulch
looks like it is probably Moab Hill that brings up the rating

brendend 03-19-2012 10:29 PM

looking at the pictures if we take out time and pick out the lines per rig or type or rig i think we'd be fine

Justin04Lj 03-19-2012 10:32 PM

wow i need my lift first i think haha

brendend 03-19-2012 10:35 PM

you have no faith in that rig

Oldguy 03-19-2012 10:49 PM

Long Hollow and Dakan Road are both closed for the winter, probably until late May. I wouldn't go near Illinois gulch this time of year for a crack at the Lotto. The Rampart is totally unpredictable right now. You'll be going along fine and all of a sudden you're in two feet of snow, or ice ruts on a steep slope. I haven't be afraid on a trail in a very long time, I was plenty scared today.
