Jeep Wrangler or nissan altima?

Okay, I am 17, and am looking to buy my first car, and im torn. Its between a Nissan Altima or a Jeep Wrangler. I will be in boot camp next summer (enlisted in US Marines). So I will have to take the car with me wherever I get stationed. I wanted a Jeep Wrangler since I was little. Just always thought they looked cool haha. But recently I want a nissan altima, and mainly just for the speed aspect of it, and how they handle/feel. The jeep came back to my mind after I went to a park with my girlfriend and she had to drive on a dirt road. She had to go so slow, and be so careful while driving on the road. I said to myself if I had a jeep i wouldnt have to drive like this, like I would in an altima. I am leaning towards jeep. But just want some advice, and knowledge of a jeep. I know they get bad gas mileage, and can roll easier. But that has to do with driver error not just the jeep itself. So can you give me some basic knowledge of a jeep wrangler. Best wranglers to get, can a all stock jeep off road good? If not what mods do I need for it? Stuff like that.

Thanks, Ryan.

A stocker can off road. You can expect some biased opinions from a wrangler enthusiast forum tho hahaa. Im 16 and even though the gas is kind of a buzzkill, I couldn't be happier. I see kids looking at vehicles they ill never own and its weird because I HAVE my absolutely favorite vehicle EVER, and its a good feeling. You can't help but smile driving a jeep.

jkaufman_95 03-19-2012 09:40 PM

I LOVE my jeep. Okay, but if your gonna be driving to / from base a lot, the mpg's of the nissan would be better, but ultimately I would probably buy a jeep.

computeruser 03-19-2012 09:41 PM

Get the Jeep. There is NOTHING interesting about the Altima, and they're not even "fast" anyway.

Crazyflyingplastics 03-19-2012 09:43 PM

I don't think anyone on this forum will tell you to get the Altima! I personally wouldn't worry about rolling the jeep. As for gas mileage, well its like driving a box down the road. Stock jeeps are very capable offroad and you will learn a lot about how it handles driving it stock first on the trails.

As someone who sold his first TJ 3 years ago when my daughter was born, I had some regret. I acutally drove an altima and just sold it this past january to get another TJ. You won't regret it. And go with a TJ(1997-2006), just my opinion though.

Might I add that by buying jeep ur supporting american based jobs.....:whistling:

I read somewhere that like over 50 percent of the parts are made in us/canada.....the automatic transmission is made here and the manual is made in brazil.........but don't take that as fact :thumb:

GonzalezR 03-19-2012 09:49 PM

Hah, Im thinking Jeep. I will defiantly be using it this summer to. Taking a trip to Michigan, and camping a lot! So Jeep it is! :D

GonzalezR 03-19-2012 09:50 PM

Yea, the commute might cost a little more. But I'll have money in my pocket for it anyways. And It will defiantly be more fun driving a Jeep around base then a altima

Another Guy In A Jeep 03-19-2012 09:51 PM

The jeep doorless and topless is definitely a cool factor. Makes all the girl's heads go spinning at you while ur driving. I wanna see an altima get that.

Isn't Altima short for altimatum. Get the Jeep. No bias here. Maybe I'm thinking of ultimatum.........whatever

EdCrbnSoul 03-20-2012 10:50 AM

Of course the bias is going to be toward the Jeep on a Jeep forum and would take it any day of the week over an Altima.
If I was looking for quick and worried about gas mileage I would lean towards the 6 cyl Mustang 305 HP 31 MPG Highway

Mitchness 03-20-2012 12:29 PM

If mileage and safety are your only concerns then get the Altima.

If everything else is your concern get the Wrangler.

stangruns11s 03-20-2012 12:56 PM

to be honest with you everybody i know who has had an altima has had tons of problems with them and its not like its a speed demon no dose it look good imo i say if your gunna get sumthing other then a jeep get a mustang or a camaro but not an altima

OregonRubicon 03-20-2012 01:03 PM

IMO get an Altima.

I have owned well over 40 cars in my life, 2 CJ5's and now a 2012 JK Rubicon.

I know for a fact if you have some piece of junk car just sitting there for weeks on end it won't bother you as much.

When I walk by my Jeep every day to catch Public Transportation it just kills me.

Not knowing where you might be stationed I would stick with a Jeep. End up in Alaska with an Altima wouldn't be good:nonono:

Considering I just looked at Craigslist in Arkansas in 5 major cities( don't know where in AR you are located) and found several in the 5-6000 range, I assume you can find something with a little digging.

Good luck and enjoy your Jeep

Also what years should I be looking for? Anything in particular?

Another Guy In A Jeep 03-20-2012 10:55 PM

97-05 are the true years of jeep.

97-06... If your gonna keep it stock just get a 4.0 and you'll be alright, a yj (80's-95) can be great vehicles too. I would drive one.

I have an '06 unlimited and I can vouch for the fact that it can off-road just fine. Not a rock crawler by any means, nor would I want to bury it and try to get out without help and a winch or two; but it's certainly more capable than a lot of vehicles I've been in that are modified for off-roading.
I do a lot of shooting and the ranges I use are literally out in the middle of nowhere and absolutely nowhere on friends' remote property. These places obviously don't have roads and when it's wet they can get downright ugly. I've had times when I've almost backed out of going when I first looked at them but decided to try anyway and the TJ hasn't let me down yet. No worries about they're capabilities, buddy.

And BTW - It's AWESOME that you've enlisted in the Marines. I appreciate your willingness and ability to serve where I wasn't able to. You're a good man and a hero. And you deserve to drive a Jeep, not a scrap-heap Altima. :)

MickeYJ 03-21-2012 11:14 AM

Jeep!!! It's more fun!!!!!!

U see your friends moms driving altimas.... Let them.

That's spot on. I personally don't recommend the Jeep as the only vehicle anyway. Mine is parked in the garage with the top off waiting for sun drenched days. There is no way I would want a Jeep with the top on. I have other cars for that. I would never want to have to put the top up and down if that was my only vehicle.

Fishin Cricket 03-21-2012 01:28 PM

10 years down the road that Altima will be just another pile..

A Jeep will still be a Jeep..
