Should i sell my hard top to get a d44?

Like the title says should I sell my hard top for extra cash to get a d44 or 8.8 and regear ?? By the way I have a soft top just never put it on or at least haven't had the chance to put it on

turnstyle 03-21-2012 11:03 PM

I wouldn't. I would prefer to save on the side for that upgrade and not sacrifice the primary top.

Makes sense I just need other people to me no lol

burton160w 03-21-2012 11:08 PM

I actually would. I sold my hard top and purchased a frameless soft top and haven't regretted it since. I really don't see many downsides to the soft top. They're a tad nosier, but overall, I'm incredibly happy with my decision. Made a boat load of cash off the hardtop too.

^^^^^ ur not helping lol yea I have a basically new top just don't have anywhere to store my hard top so haven't taken it off and I'm not renting a storage unit cuz they want to much money lol

opcocrg 03-21-2012 11:25 PM

Sell the top. It's a nice luxury but you'll get over not having it before you know it. I sold my hard top and full steel doors and been rockin' the full soft set-up for years and have no regrets. I made enough cash selling mine that it was a more than reasonable sacrifice from my perspective.

How do u think it will look wit a soft top

lindel 03-21-2012 11:38 PM

What do you want more? A hard top, or a Dana 44?

If you can sell it for enough, you might be able to upgrade both axles.

Lol that's a tough ??? It's my DD so a hard top is pretty nice but I find myself off roading a lot more then I did before and I have a soft top so it's not like I wouldn't have a top

lindel 03-21-2012 11:44 PM

Get an 8.8 for the rear, Super 30 for the front. Best of both worlds.

Trust me....you WILL get used to having only a soft top. Don't get me wrong, hard tops are great and I liked mine, but, when I weighed what I could get for selling it against what I could do with the money I was getting for it, how often I actually had it on against how often I left it off, and how big of a pain in the ass it was "in my opinion" to store it when it was off.....I was a lot heavier on the "sell it" side than I was on the "keep it" side.

Jeep_guy3 03-22-2012 12:35 AM

I was in the same boat, I was gonna sell my hard top and get a soft top and use the left over cash for more upgrades.

Reason that I didn't (granted this is just my opinion) if I changed my mind and didn't like the soft top it's hard to find hard tops and expensive as hell (you have the luxury of trying it first). It helps the resale value having that hard top, seems they are more desirable. They are quieter and i like the looks of a hard top better. I have a spot to store my hard top.

Redsand 03-22-2012 12:53 AM

sell it and get a 88

LiftedTj 03-22-2012 05:21 AM

Keep it. Save for your upgrades. How long would it take to save for an 8.8 as opposed to save for a Hardtop?

denisbaldwin 03-22-2012 05:41 AM

Why don't you keep the top and look for a good deal on an Explorer 8.8? You'll get more axle for less money and they're everywhere.

McDaniel 03-22-2012 07:22 AM

sold my TJ hard top never a regret, drove a yj in wisconsin/minnesota for years with only half doors and a soft top without issue. Only adavantage to the hard top is that low lifes can't unzip the window to get in to steal stuff. That is the bottom line. Putting the hard top on/off and storage are the down side.

He will atleast spend $1,000 on a 8.8 to get in his TJ. You can get hardtops for cheaper.

If youre wheeling alot more youll appreciate the better flexible material, the lighter top. Being able to.just pull it if you want, and the hard top wont get you over a rock, tree whatever. :thumb:

I think ima pull my hard top put the soft top on and see how I like it and make my decision that way just don't have anywhere to put my top

A well maintained soft top will be nearly as quiet as a hardtop around town and light highway duty, but they do wear out eventually and coupled with wear and tear along with dirt and extreme temps, the life decreasesn

solman 03-22-2012 10:31 AM

Go for it! Selling my hardtop and full doors paid for my Currie JJ adjustable control arms (all 8), Everything I needed to build my own 8.8, and a used set of 35s :)

Pilgrim_Jeep 03-22-2012 10:40 AM

Where you from? I'll trade you my hardtop for your soft top and all the hardware...then you can sell my hardtop, and use the cash for upgrades, and STILL have your own hard top...

solman 03-22-2012 10:43 AM

If you were closer to me I would take you up on that in a heartbeat.

I would too but I'm in Cali lol kinda far lol

crallscars 03-22-2012 10:57 AM

No. save the hard top

I just changed over from hard to soft top,

Plus side,
1.You get to take the top down on nice days.

Negitive side,
1. it's noisy,
2. you use more gas (about 1 to 1.5 mpg)topless even worse 2+ mpg
3. not secure, a zipper or knife away from a theft
4. harder to heat/cool a soft top
5. you have to deal with zippers and plastic tabs to put the top up
6. hard to see thru plastic windows
7. to put groceries/stuff in back you have to deal with zippers & tabs
8. _______________________(your comment here)

I only have a soft top but I don't regret buying it , it was quite warm when it was down in the 20s but don't know how the ac is gonna work, not that I care with a convertible now. Noise? Big deal it's a Jeep. Theft? Don't leave you're valuables lying around. MPG? Then you shoulda bought a Prius !!!

crallscars 03-23-2012 07:35 AM

hay, fuel milage has become important now that fuel is closing in on $4 a gallon.

I gotta save money where I can so that I can afford all the repair parts for this thing!

IDK man, that Jeep looks bad ass with that hard top. But I think what people have failed to ask you is what the main purpose of your Jeep is (DD or play toy) and how often you'd take the soft top down. I purposely sought out a hard top Jeep because Summer is shorter than the other 3 seasons and the soft tops start aging the minute they're installed. I think the best way to know if this is a good decision is to bum a ride in a soft top Jeep and see how it feels to you.

Depending on where you get it you can get a bolt on 8.8. Not sure the price difference between that and a D44.
