'95 YJ Slow and Steady College Budget Build

Alright so I got this about a week ago and decided to start up a thread to get advice, oppinions, etc, and also to see the progress as I go. I hope to build it up quite a bit but its going to take awhile as I am a college student with very limited funds. My basic plans are to lift it for 33s or 35s, armor it up, arb lockers, and some other cool stuff to make it capable but still be my daily driver to and from school.

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/...4/SAM_0295.jpg

And here it is in the garage next to the CJ7

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/...4/SAM_0296.jpg

Itís a í95 YJ 4.0L 5speed. It came stock (except for the wheels which are nothing special) and with a few minor problems. the windshield was cracked to hell, motor mount problem, the drivers door didnít close, passenger lock didnít work, and the whole dashboard didnít work except for the lights. Oh and there was no hardware in the hard top except for along the drivers side wheel well.

The kid who owned the jeep before didnít seem to dig too deep into any of the problems with it, the first one I tackled was the drivers door, that was easy, basically the mount for the latch stud that bolts into the tub was cracked and bent so it wasnít lined up, Iíve been using a hammer to wack it into place until the door shuts until the new stud comes in the mail. I stole a lock from my dads old cj doors and threw that in the passenger door, and got the windshield replaced for cheap too.

After I got the simple stuff fixed I worked on the dash which I was afraid Iíd have to take apart the whole dash board to get to the wires behind it. Fortunately after a few burnt fuses we found that it had something to do with when I put it into reverse. The previous owner had wired new LED lights in the rear and since they didnít have a reverse light, he took the wire that hooks into the reverse light and used it as another ground wire, causing a short. So all I had to do was cut that wire in the back and the dash works!
The most major problem with the jeep was this motor mount problem, basically the 3 bolts for the passenger side motor mount bracket that bolt into the block had all broken and heíd fashioned up a mount that bolted to the top of the alternator. Its hard to get a drill in there and quite frankly Iím not comfortable drilling into the block of my engine so Iím going to find a machine shop to get that fixed up for me.

Being on a budget Iím doing my best to scrounge for parts, Iíve donít pretty good so far, it helps that my dad has a lot of extra parts from his CJ7. I also got a free CB from my gramps and a fiberglass antenna that we found on the side of the road. I have the console mounted and wired I just need an antenna mount and cable.

As this is the second jeep Iíve spent a lot of time working on (me and my dad just finished the cj7) Iíd love lots of advice, criticism, ideas for cheapness, etc. so Iíll keep updating with the little stuff. being on a budget Iím in no hurry to lift quite yet and I know I can wheel it pretty good stock so my plan for near future upgrades are:
-weld in a hitch receiver
-warn m8000 winch (or vr8000, does anybody have any experience with these?)
-home made jerry can mount
-Kill switch
-storage box for the back
-fix motor mount
-tow hooks

Nice looking Jeep.

Welcome to the forum, Sasquatch. I'll ride along for the build. JeepAddOnsChris, a vendor here, is knowledgable about many different brands and lines of winches. I've spoken extensively with him about winches and other goodies. You can hit him up at 1-800-388-8637 or PM him from the vendor list at the top of the page.

Good luck with the build.

Sasquatch 4x4 03-26-2012 12:32 PM

just doing some research for when i get bigger tires. i've always really liked steelys. what do you guys think of these? 15x8 is the right dimension for 33s or 35s right?

Hard to go wrong w/ steelies....check w/ the tire manufacturer you'll buy from regarding rim widths. You'll want different from stock (less) backspacing for wider tires to prevent rub, too.

Nice wheeling country out there, I used to live in Edmonds, up the sound from you a bit.

Sasquatch 4x4 03-28-2012 02:20 PM

ok, these have 4 inches of backspacing. do you know how much backspacing the stock yj wheels had?

Small update

so just a little update since last. i'm slowly painting all the details black.

Here is the front. hood hinges, hooks, and headlight trim all painted black.
also removed the diamond plating on the bumper so i could get a chain or strap around the bumper since i dont have any tow hooks.

being on a budget i got a free CB from my grandpa and an antenna we found on the side of the road. i made the mount for it myself, all i had to buy was the coax cable and antenna mount.

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/...4/SAM_0302.jpg

and lastly i painted the corner guards that came with it black and cut them to fit the inset lights. also put the tire carrier back on, even though the spare is shot i like the look better. and that ribbon is for my brother who is in Afghanistan right now.

Looks great! Love that color.

SandyMushYJ 03-29-2012 10:10 AM

Hey 'squatch, I have a set of OE tow hooks from a TJ I could probably donate to a poor college kid if you want to PM me a shipping address. They are an open design, not shackles, but you should be able to bolt them on top of your frame next to your off-road lights and they would be good for front pulls.

Sasquatch 4x4 03-29-2012 11:59 PM

SandyMushYJ Just pm'd you!

Did some painting with some spray on Bedliner today. I'll post pics in a day or two after the paint cures and I get it all back together

Another Guy In A Jeep 03-30-2012 12:10 AM

As a matter of fact the front bumper is bedlined and drying in the garage now. I' do the back if I have any left. Besides those stupid hoops the back just has a chrome strip over the end of the frame. I guess it works as protection so I might bedline it or just spray it black

"free CB from my grandpa and an antenna we found on the side of the road"

I love that! Keep up the good work. Also nice that you are recognizing your brother.

fun project

:dance:hi, looks like u got a fun project, let the games start.....ps it look like my first jeep project which was a cj5..:hide:

Sasquatch 4x4 04-01-2012 07:28 PM

a little more progress. She looks a lot better now!!

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/...4/SAM_0310.jpg

got all the fluids changed except the t-case, bedlined my wheels and front and back bumpers, and made an instatrunk (just need a latch to secure it down now).

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/...4/SAM_0315.jpg

Here are the wheels bedlined. i used the duplicolor brand spray on bedliner.

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/...4/SAM_0311.jpg

And my front and rear bumper:

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/...4/SAM_0313.jpg

I also fixed my motor mounts, when the previous owner had it, the 3 bolts that bolt the mount bracket into the block of the engine all broke. He had jerryrigged this funny lookin mount that, when i got the bolts drilled out at the shop, the mechanic said was probably a lot stronger than the stock mounts, well it took up a lot of space and the way it was rigged up i could change the serpentine belt so i changed that today and put a new mount in with grade 8 bolts and it opened up a lot more room. with the old mount, the engine was also sitting almost an inch lower than stock.

heres some pictures of the motor mount the previous owner had made:

i did, i also did quite a bit of sanding. its worked well except the rear bumper, the bedliner didnt stick at all which was frustrating, but i plan on getting a new rear bumper anyway so i just took those hoop things off today.

If i painted over chrome again, i would do more sanding and use self etching primer.

ohhh. my buddy has a sand blaster so i think im jsut gonna sand blast all my chrome then paint over it. im going to accent everything gun metal gray, so ill probably turn all the chrome to gun metal gray within the next week or so. do you have a bumper idea yet?

yeah that'll work, you just want to make sure you get it nice and rough i think. My front bumper was chrome too and i sanded it the same as the back but it stuck real well except for a few spots that dont really matter.

As for the bumper i have a design that i got off of a guy here and hope to have someone build it for me at the right price. (i dont have a welder and cannot weld, i wish i could and did though it would give me a lot more options and save some money too.)

yeah i think it will be easy with the sand blaster. and i live in the south... so everyone has a welder... so if i need anything welded i can mention that i drive a jeep and need to make somthing to an eager stranger then they will help me out so i got lucky there... and i just happened to be talking to my buddy when he told me he had a 3 car shop, welders, plasma cutter, saws, grinders, tools, ect. and he happens to be an engineer... so he is very capable...

haha you're lucky!! i know a few people with welders but havent really seen any of their work and most are kids my age who just got them, i'd rather have someone whose a little more experienced do my welding. the only person i'll except with a crappy/OK job on my jeep is me!

I might upgrade someday, i think i'd get a new antenna first though.

Zombiekiller 04-03-2012 11:02 PM

lol the side of the road special not doing the trick?? thats a lucky find though...

Sasquatch 4x4 04-03-2012 11:03 PM

yeah, its not broken or anything, just i dont really like the fiberglass and its not as flexy as i'd like and not adjustable at all.
