Question about putting on full doors

Howdy guys, recently I removed the doors off my TJ for the first time ever. I have put them back on without any problems. Iv'e noticed that after I have tighten down the pins with the nut and try to lift the door, it lifts up a little bit. I wanted to know if this was normal?

My door opens and closes with no problem, but I don't remember my door having a little bit of play before I took off the door with the bolt tighten down. Did I need to add a washer or something? The nut is threaded on right and everything. Anybody have this issue?

pretty sure there is supposed to be clearance so you don't tighten down on the actual hinge part. my '99 and '06 the threads stop early

fourty4magjr 03-26-2012 02:58 PM

I don't even have the bolts on mine :thumb:

Thanks for the speedy response, I will just leave them as is. As long as they can't be undone a hand I'll be fine since it's my DD

I think they mean nuts; they lost their nuts, but it's OK.

Westbrook 03-26-2012 03:51 PM

No nuts for me either!

LiftedTj 03-26-2012 04:46 PM

Just leave them off. My TJ didnt come with the nuts. No nuts, all the glory!

LilYeller 03-26-2012 04:53 PM

On both my 99 and my 08 I took them off threw them in the trash

JDsDream 03-26-2012 06:20 PM

I believe I have 3 nuts. Is that odd?
Haven't used them since I took the doors off about (30 minutes after leaving the stealership).

I'm not even going to ask. Hi Julie!

Someone should come up with a quick release fastener for people who want to feel doubly safe.

Once Far Off 03-26-2012 07:30 PM

Yep - I just left the nuts off.

Beaker541 03-26-2012 07:44 PM

Took mine off and I'm gonna cut the threaded part off so it's not hanging under the hinge.. They just look bad in my opinion

I removed the lower nuts and tossed them. Then hacksawed off the threaded section, coated the posts in grease and haven't looked back!

jetfan4lyf 03-26-2012 08:15 PM

My nuts snapped thread and all so it actually saved me some work.

I understand the sarcasm on what you wrote but I only used the term "bolt" once in my sentence and that was on accident because I was trying to refer it to tightening the door down.

Thanks for the responses though, I suppose it is not as big as a problem as I thought to have to doors on without the nuts.

robhurlburt 03-27-2012 07:06 AM

the only reason i keep the nuts on is to deter theifs form stealing my doors.

As easy as the nuts came off the pins, I don't think keeping them will deter thieves. Besides, the pins are still in the hinge so unless the thief knows what he's looking at, they wouldn't know. Besides, many of us have a canvas top (or no top at all) that is no deterent either. But that's what makes having a Jeep fun... you can do what you want with it.

Megadethx 03-28-2012 12:41 PM

I am also nutless .

I do throw some grease on the pins when I put the doors back on. makes it nice and easy to take the doors off the next time.

Peepers 03-28-2012 12:49 PM

On my 98 when I used to put the nuts back on, I could sock them down until the door wouldn't swing anymore. probably just so you can't do that and some idiot would take it to the dealership saying the door doesn't swing anymore...

If you don't have a hard top, you're not deterring anything.

If you do have a hard top and lock the doors, you're good. Can't take the doors off unless they're open.

billybobjoe 03-28-2012 01:59 PM

I am also nutless, my jeep came that way :D Although I am thinking of putting a plastic washer between my upper and lower hinge because the door opening and closing has peeled all the paint off the lower part of my hinge and it's starting to rust. Has anyone done this? The washer I mean.
