April Big Bear Holcomb Run

If you are still all pumped up from the awsome Calico meet and greet (thanks to Turdhurdler), and didn't get enough wheeling in, or you didn't get to make it, or you just want to get out and do some more wheeling....We are planning to make a run up to big bear and hit Holcomb Creek Trail next month in April. We will probably have time to hit up another trail, options are dishpan, gold mountain or if your up for it john bull. I'm open for any weekend and was thinking around mid April or so, and whatever is good for everyone else.

For me its going to be a weekend camping/wheeling trip and will camp Friday night, hit the trails Saturday and camp Saturday night for anyone that wants to camp out. The campground is Holcomb Valley Campground, its first come first serve and there should be plenty of room. i believe its till off season, no camp host and its 12$ per night.

The Charles Wells book describes Holcomb Creek as one challenging boulder field after another, narrow and tippy in places. Not recommended for stock vehicles, high ground clearance, lockers, and undercarriage protection recommended.

So this is not a newbie run, or for stockers. There is also the possibility if there is enough interest we can organize a stocker/newbie run if someone is willing to lead another trail. I have not run this trail yet, but others may have.

please come prepared with the usual stuff:
1. if your going to camp it will be cold at night so be prepared.
2. food, snacks, lunch on trail, 1 gallon of water per person per day
3. front and rear recover tow points - Required
4. cb radio
5. fire extinguisher
6. leave the beer at home or at camp for after. our runs there is no drinking on the trail or anyone, including passengers

Here a map of there are to find the camp, we can meet at Holcomb Valley camp before the runhttp://img204.imageshack.us/img204/2967/campmap.jpgTentative

Scheduled Date: 4/28/12 weekend
We plan on meeting and leaving from holcomb Valley camp at 10am Saturday, so please arrive with enough time to air down and disconnect.

So post up if you would like to go, and what weekends your can make it.

You better hope for real warm weather, there's a couple of feet of snow on Holcomb right now

BeantownR6 03-27-2012 09:42 PM

the way this winter has been, i would be surprised there is still snow there in 3 weeks, if there is, then snow caming sounds fun also :)

when i went up there last month after a foot of snow, it was melted away in less than a week :(

MNTNGOAT 03-27-2012 09:43 PM

count me in. just for the dayrun. unless the stars allign and i get the extra money and time off. plus i have a couple upgrades to come b4 this run so highly unlikly ill camp. and the later the betther for me so the last weekend.

I'm on the crew to maintain this trail (Holcomb) ...5 rock gardens..and we just re-did the gatekeeper on it back in late Oct. The trail requires At Least a rear locker and 33's. And if you're running John Bull, Dishpan and even Gold Mountain, I'd make sure to have skids and sliders...I've done them all...good times!

Have fun!

Lorie :wavey:

suicideking 03-27-2012 09:58 PM

Interested in anything that doesn't require lockers.

I have a Sport with 2.5" lift, rails and skids.

I am a newbie to this message board. Hoping to meet and get to know you all. I can most likely make April 28 weekend. I have a 2012 jk with rock protection 3" lift and 35's. Would I be good for this trail?

BillG.OTD 03-27-2012 10:04 PM

Nice post Brad, I'm in for Saturday for sure and maybe Friday. I live close by so no need for camping. April can be a dicey month, but hey we can try. Any weekend in April is good by me, maybe later half of the month to let more snow melt. Although Holcomb is a tough trail, there are many very nice, scenic (not so tough) trails in the area. Sounds great!

Your right, but after living up there for 32 years, we used to laugh at people that would start planting flowers before mothers day, because the next day there might be a foot of snow. The last year I lived up there, it snowed 3 feet on may 10th! Crazy! I hope it does melt, because I want to go to this run.

kyle3792 03-27-2012 11:42 PM

Count me in for this run. Any weekend will work for me

JRickW 03-28-2012 12:51 AM

I'd like to go but I am on the high seas the 19th - 22nd, and have a concert to go to on the 28th so it looks like I am out. I will be watching this thread though. Y'all have fun and I want to see some good pics!

yomondo 03-28-2012 02:08 AM

I won't be able to make this trip. I have a big trip planned for 4/19-4/22, and some Jeep maintenance and wifey TLC weekends before then.

I've got gps tracks for most of the trails out there. I thought I already uploaded them to EveryTrail, but I just looked and didn't see them. If you want them, I can compile them and upload them to EveryTrail for you to download.

Gotta love that snow. 2' with lockers on. WooHoo! In the mountains. Did get down one hill I had to winch myself back up on 6 or so separate times.

i haven't been on this run, but if its like john bull its gonna be really tough without lockers and 31's. but you did get through calico pretty good!

looks like we got 4 any weekends and the 28th.

so how does the 28th sound? snow should melt by then, or snow more by then....

Dont forget the rear axle if it hasnt been addressed...wheeling 35s-37s on a stock D35=Kaboom!

kyle3792 03-28-2012 10:11 AM

My buddy and I are putting in a 6 and maybe a 44 in the rear

You will still want to regear with the 6 cylinder to get back into the stock powerband. I am running 35s, 6cyl, manual trans, and 4.88 gears.

I did John Bull open/open on 31's :punk: Granted I had an awesome spotter and we went the easy way, but if you're not scared of a little dent or scrape and aren't to proud to take a little tug you can do any trail up there. As it sounds you did Calico which I feel has harder obstacles.
Don't tap out of a great run just because of your rig. There will be others there that will help you through or around the obstacle. Worst case scenario.... you ride shotgun with someone and still get to see the trail.

Last time i ran this trail we had a guy in a stock tj 31s open diffs. Didnt have to much issue other than not listening to his spotter (me) which got him self stuck a couple times. I had him all the way to the last big boulder told him take it easy wat does he do. Slams the gas slides off the rock on to his drive shaft. Took about an hour to get him off due to lack of room to recover foward and not get getting any traction behind him. Every obstal has an easy line for newbs and harder lines for anyone that likes risks. Also all 3 jeeps we were with yook rock slider damage on the tubs

Both of these are from holcomb creek.
