What is the best way to take off a hard top?

I have a Wrangler and as summer is coming up I'm getting ready to take the top off. I was just wondering if anybody has a special technique that you do. I've been told they are extremely heavy. So I was just how everybody does it.

Grab a friend or 2. They are pretty heavy myself and one of my good friends helps me every season taking it off and putting in back on(which is harder). We slide it back a little one of us goes under it and supports it then waits till the other one comes to the back then we each take a side and hoist it off. It's a pain but worth it!

On my old tj I could in lock it and crawl in, stand up and walk off the back of the jeep with it... It wasn't lifted..

They're around 100lbs. A hoist of some sort is the easiest.:thumb:

I enlisted my wife's help for the first few summers, but then got creative and engineered a way to do it myself by retaining it under my carport. They only weigh about 80lbs, but are very awkward to remove.

I put eye screws into the joist in garage ceiling and use 2 ratchet straps to lift it up, then park with the nose of the jeep under the top. It cost about $10 and I can do it myself. If you decide to do this, don't lift it up more than you have to - it comes down hard and crooked. I used a tiny drill bit to make test holes to ensure the eye screws are properly fastened and can support the weight. You could also rig up a similar lift with a hand crank hoist.

They aren't that heavy. They're awkward, but have a buddy grab one side with you on the other and it's extremely simple. Unless you're enlisting the help of Betty White or Michael J. Fox, two people can do it EASILY.

This was done to my wife's Jeep, four eye bolts and four ratchet straps.

I used to do on my old YJ what a previous poster said...crawl in the back, straighten up with it balanced on my head and palms, and walk it off. I almost dropped it one time because the liftgate opened up on me and it nearly tottered backwards onto the concrete!

since the top weighs almost as much as I do, i put four post in the ground with two timbers across them then slid some pvc pipe under the top and just rolled it on the timbers. i can slide it in my truck from there and into the shed no prob. one man job.
