Making your TJ more "Manly"

So I don't have much money to throw around... But I wanted to see what kind of ideas y'all had for things that make a jeep look more rugged? At this time I don't really want to do anything more than like 250$ - 300$ on any one thing so there is a baseline I guess... Bring it on!

Sasquatch 4x4 03-30-2012 12:31 AM

Steelys always add a rugged look. You can usually find cheap ones somewhere

CrackrJack 03-30-2012 12:46 AM

Steely's meaning rims?

yes

I don't think u can make a Jeep manly if you're not manly enough to already feel manly driving it as it is. Period lol

CrackrJack 03-30-2012 01:09 AM

Woah woah woah... I'm very fond of the ingrained manliness of my jeep. But my female roommates called her "adorable" and I said to myself... "Time to start making this baby a badass!"
I just got her two weeks ago... But unfortunately my first mods on it were the 3 new ujoints I had to install :/ so I'm trying to get a feel for things y'all have installed or seen that I can try... Since I don't have a lot of cash or experience to throw at a trial and error process....

HarryJeepGuy 03-30-2012 01:12 AM

Mud and scratches are free. How about some pics of what you're working with?

TJspeed 03-30-2012 01:17 AM

bashing into rocks and trees makes them look rugged

CrackrJack 03-30-2012 01:20 AM

Lol that made me laugh a lot.

He said rugged though..not manly. Certainly a woman could drive a rugged looking Jeep too.

I think Jeeps...especially Wranglers, are naturally pretty "rugged" looking...unless you intentionally screw them up with dubs, lots of chrome, etc. I suppose the easiest way to make a Jeep look more rugged would be to put on some bigger mud terrain tires and something like black steel wheels. See my build link. Went from stock chili pepper red and stock tires and with some rattle can paint, fender trimming, and 33" mud tires it got a $h!tload more rugged looking I think.

Photobucket hates me so this is all I got ATM...

SurfKaster 03-30-2012 01:44 AM

Put some girly mudflaps on it

G54 03-30-2012 01:44 AM

Lose the chrome side steps first. Free mod. In fact, you might be able to sell them. :thumb:

SurfKaster 03-30-2012 01:45 AM

& pull off the water wings

CrackrJack 03-30-2012 01:47 AM

Replace that stock front bumper with a nice aftermarket bumper/pushbar.

And be sure to plan ahead. If you ever plan on making this thing an offroad machine dont waste money on something your going to regret in the future

CrackrJack 03-30-2012 01:49 AM

I actually use the sidesteps a lot though... I've heard of people dipping them? Along with the wheels?

G54 03-30-2012 01:50 AM

Your jeep reminds me a little of the way my LJ looked when I first got it. Here's a before and after to give you an idea what you might do. One thing you have going for you is that it's black!

MickeYJ 03-30-2012 01:55 AM

Lose.... And I mean LOSE the chrome. Plasti dip your hood latches, rock sliders/steps and the rims.
3-4 cans x $6 each.

... And yes... It does look cute. Lol

CrackrJack 03-30-2012 01:56 AM

Oh man I dont miss that Ohio weather! That thing looks nice though!

Somis, what do you mean by things I will regret?

It's not just that they are chrome, but if you ever go off road they will be a low hanging liability that will likely end up on the trail somewhere. If you need the steps to get in, there are rock sliders with bars that will protect your tub and give you a place to step on to get in.

He means you should save up and get good quality stuff that will last u instead of buying cheap stuff that would brake easy.

MickeYJ 03-30-2012 01:59 AM

Love my black steps, my red jeep and my tan puppy lol

MickeYj... You may be my first forum enemy...
I'm worried about plasti dip looking tacky... I've never seen anything dipped up close.

Water wings would refer to my fender flares?

No...the plastic ends on your bumpers...commonly called milk jugs.

Very unique way to mask off your tires!

CrackrJack 03-30-2012 02:08 AM

Man I was coming into the thinking about more aesthetically pleasing stuff like roof racks and more lights or something... Now I'm considering armoring my jeep. You guys should be in sales.
