Peter's Mill Run/Taskers Gap (Edinburg, VA) Trail

I am heading down to Peter's Mill Run this weekend (Sunday specifically April 1st) from DC if anyone is interested in joining. I have read up plenty on it, it looks easy/calm/perfect for a beginner and close to stock vehicle. Hence why I am going (first trail exp).

I have a stock '11 JKU with 32" BF Goodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM tires. My buddy who is probably joining has a completely stock Ford Explorer.

Hopefully we are fine haha :surrender:

Made it back, ton of fun for beginner trail riders. Nothing a stock couldnt do. Just make sure to avoid some pointy tallish rocks and you should be good. I would say there was only one section that may give stock tires a little difficulty. That section is if you come from the Edinsburg entrance. Within the first .1-.2 mile, you encounter a steep climb ontop of medium size rocks with cutback corners. Def B.Betty's favorite part.
The trail had little to nobody on it except a CJ who brought his awesome pitbull. I also passed a Toyota truck as I was about to leave, and ran into the District Ranger RIGHT before reaching the parking lot. I had paid my $5, so was good to go. Even helped spot him to 'turn around' as he didnt want to hit the big boulders just off to the side of the trail. Taskers Gap was closed, otherwise would have done that trail also, but overall I was very happy I went.

I don't drive a Jeep, but I saw this thread while searching for info for other trails in the area and couldn't resist responding.

I'm the guy you saw in the Toyota yesterday, I also headed out from DC for my first try at taking my new-to-me truck off road. I had a great time, and had no issues with my stock Tacoma Double Cab. I saw you, the other Jeep, and then a few hours later when I was headed back north on the trail I ran into a group in an F-250 Super Duty that was having some issues with ground clearance on very basic obstacles, maybe not the best vehicle choice.

I wish I had seen this sooner, I definitely would have gone. I live in the tysons corner area and have gone to gwnf several times. Let me know next time either of yall go and I'll tag along if you need another vehicle to go with.

InvertChaos 04-03-2012 09:33 PM

I would've gone too!

sounds like a blast. I'll be up in falls church come this end of may. I'll be hitting up this thread when I get there to see if anyone wants to go. did you happen to snap any pics or take any video footage?

11BUL 04-11-2012 03:12 PM

Sorry for the delay guys, its been probably a week since I have been on WF. I plan on going within the next month so if you guys wanted to plan a day event (hopefully Taskers Gap is open) then I say lets do it. I am probably going to bring my buddy along as well for the ride as he wants to get more involved (not that I am anywhere near an expert or have the truck to do so).

Like I said let me know, would love to head down again soon.....

Re:

We recently purchased a 12' Rubicon and are seeking some beginner trails to wet the appetite. It seems some of the trails mentioned earlier would be perfect, so shoot me a message the next time your heading out. I'm new to the offroading community and could learn a thing or two. I'm also from the Arlington area.

mcdaichman 05-05-2012 03:45 PM

anyone taking any beginner trips soon? I am from alexandria/ arlington area

Jwood621 05-06-2012 11:05 AM

Those trails are very beginner friendly. I haven't been there in a while but would like to if you guys pick a date.

Rooster454 05-06-2012 11:55 AM

I am actually thinking about going next saturday May 12th for just a day trip since mother's day is the next day and I've got family gatherings on sunday.

Let me know if anyone is interested in that date :thumb:

mcdaichman 05-07-2012 07:50 AM

I'm headed down to shoe creek on saturday 6/9 to meet a bunch of guys if you're interested. Shoe creek is a little south of charlottesville on 29

Check out the VA section at the bottom of the main page and read through the shoe creek thread. I've never been down there but the guys says it's stocker friendly, I don't know your setup but it seems you'll be fine with whatever you have.

Hey so I'm looking to get out and do this trail the day after thanksgiving. I am leaving from Arlington and was wondering if anyone could tell me how to get there (I assume there is no address I can plug in my GPS)?

NC_TJ 11-26-2012 08:56 AM

I grew up around there. Want to head to Edinburg Va to the shell station off I81. You can get your pass there.

D328jet 11-27-2012 12:50 PM

From Clarendon

Hey guys, just started tracking your conversation and I just got a '12 Rubi. I would def be down for the trip next time you go. I have a little off-roading experience down in the Everglades (FL), but not much up here and Peters Mill Run seems like a good start. Also, if you're in Arlington, hit me up and we'll convoy.

NC_TJ 11-27-2012 02:08 PM

Not Sure If I will be Taking the XJ or TJ but Jan 1st through the 3rd I will be down there Visiting Family if any one wants to go then.

Reaper2332 12-07-2012 08:19 PM

Hey guys just reading up on the posts for these trails. I did Peters Mill last Saturday with my '11 Stock JKU and had a blast (Got my wife hooked!) It took my about 2.5 hours from Edinburg Gap parking lot to Woodstock Tower Rd. You can definitely do it faster but we had to stop a couple of times to give my 8 months old a break from her carseat and that pics.

I got bad news for you NC_TJ but according to the paperwork they gave me when I purchased my permit, it says the trails are all closed from January to the end of March. Guess you could try calling the Ranger Station when you get in town to see if they are still open. I will double check again tomorrow and let you know!

I will be out at Taskers Gap around 2-230 tomorrow so I will let you all know how it is!

Just got back from Tasker's Gap. It wasn't as good as I'd hoped. It had a few good spots but I prefer Peters Mill. It was an out and back and it took about an hour to do it. I think everyone should give it a try once to make up their own mind, so I recommend if your heading out there do Taskers Gap first and then go do Peters Mill. I hope this information is helpful and if anyone has questions just message me.

Here are some pics of me at Peter's Mill and Tasker's Gap.

Tasker's Gap!

Reaper, I would like to go up there soon. I have a 2010 JK 2dr with the premium package but no mods. I am busy this weekend obviously given it is xmas, but what about the first week in january? might be fun with a little water/snow.

would you like to go out again? I have not been up there yet. But it looks like it has better views than FS162 does. where did you buy your permit?

I have been going out right underneath waynesboro at the coal road area. FS162. highly recommended if you want to push a stock to the limit. its 2.5 hours and pops out right on Blue ridge parkway.:dance:

Reaper2332 12-17-2012 09:17 PM

Hey lbredefe, I am actually heading out there on Saturday with a buddy that has a lifted trail blazer. I cant really guarantee anything about early Jan. I do know that they close down GWNF for ORV from late Jan to Mar so I will definitely get a run in sometime in Jan.

You can buy your permit at a number of places, If you take 81 south from 66 you get off on the edinburgh exit and turn left about 1-2 miles down the road there is an exxon gas station on the right (Perfect place to fill up before you go hit the trail.) Check out this site it has a list of all the places to get a permit.

I would like to tag along on sat if that's OK.

zr.despain14 12-18-2012 06:01 PM

How bumpy is this trail? My wife is pregnant, and I was thinking from what I've read its mostly a diary road between the obstacles. Which she could get out and spot me for. Is that about right?

Hey zr. despain14, First of all congrats on the baby! We just had our first one last March! Now I was just talking with my wife and after the research we did when she was pregnant we dont think its a good idea for your wife to be on the trail. There are parts of it that are smooth but we spent alot of time bouncing around on the trail (More bouncing than smooth road). I'm definitely cool with you tagging along if you can! Do you live here in NOVA?

zr.despain14 12-18-2012 06:52 PM

No i am in Hampton roads, and have wanted to get out west for some offroading. Thanks for the info.

Extremely bumpy. Wouldn't recommend a pregnant wife coming along. Its not hard to pass between the few obstacles, but you're driving over baseball sized rocks.

Reaper2332 12-18-2012 07:04 PM

Also if anyone is interested on coming out this weekend your invited just let me know if you want to meet up!

Tagging onto Invert Chaos comment: Definitely easier to picture than how I explained it!
