Paracord Grab handles ~ how to make your own.

I had alot of interest in these when I built them and posted it on the http://www.wranglerforum.com/f5/chea...ds-102868.html thread. So heres a writeup on how I made them including lengths of rope and item numbers. This is my first writeup and I dont have the biggest vocabulary so hope this makes sense to everyone lol.

Items needed
Paracord (any color you desire)
Anchor shackels with screw pins (Mini D-rings item #93855 at harbor freight)
lighter
scissors
http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/...-59-59_135.jpg

First off we will need to make the core of the grab handle You will need:
35 inches of cord (qty. 2) for rollbar wrap core
50 inches of cord for the core of the main handle
2 d-ring shackles

This is what the handle wrap core should look like after you burn the edges together
http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/...-16-59_536.jpg

And here is the entire core all mocked up
http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/...-00-11_486.jpg

Things to note: I wrapped the main handle core around the end pieces 3 times and the end pieces around the D-ring only 2 times. I did this to make the core bigger and therefore the main wrap will be bigger.

Now were done making the core and heres what you should have:
http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/...-12-04_607.jpg

http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/...-12-24_738.jpg

Now its time to start wrapping. (que Dr. Dre and Eminem) lol.

Items needed:
110 inches of cord (qty 2) for rollbar wraps (55inches of each color)
120 inches of cord for main grab handle wrap (60 inches of each color)

This is the time consuming part and I am going to cheat a bit and Post a video that I found particularly helpful.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMid1dbf9G0

I wrapped the main core first and made the knots as tight as possible and butted them right up to the cores of the roolbar wraps. heres a pic

http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/...-38-33_791.jpg

http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/...0-38-38_24.jpg

This is the part you will see when the handle is finished
http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/...-38-42_908.jpg

Here is the under side so you can see how I melted the cord to ensure it wouldnt come apart. On the left is where I started the wrap and on the right is where I ended it, basically I just melted them together the same way as when I started.

http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/...-38-48_775.jpg

Then I did the rollbar wraps with the same wrap. The only issue I had here is getting around the core for the main grab handle. Hard to explain but I just kept going and worked around the cores, heres some pics.

Hope this helps and if there are any questions please dont hesitate to ask. Good luck and Happy Jeepin'

you can get it off ebay or any army navy store. and some army surplus stores. its usually .10 cents a foot

Jeeplover1 03-30-2012 07:00 PM

i make my own stuff its super easy and cheaper

LilYeller 03-30-2012 07:02 PM

Got the cord from an Army surplus store. $9 for 100ft you can also get it from ebay.
Shackles were $3 each from harbor freight.
total spent was $30 plus tax for 2 of them and you will have alot of paracord leftover.

Finally decided to make me a set. I went with the king cobra weave for a more meaty look. I used black as the base and OD on the outside part of the handle it's self. So far I a pleased with the way they turned out.

Good stuff! Was considering going that way but I liked the 2 tone for my application. But that king cobra weave does give you something more to hold on to.

LilYeller 04-12-2012 05:41 PM

btw if you want to make some rear seat belt hold downs just follow the guide for the roll bar wraps

35 inches for core
110 inches for the wrap (55 inches per color)

AlanRose1 04-16-2012 03:33 PM

sick dude, wayyy better than the one i made. lol one of these days ima have to take the tie and make an official set. also, what do you think about tying a square not or a figure 8 follow through to hold the cords together instead of melting them?

LilYeller 04-16-2012 03:48 PM

It would be ok for this application. It would leave a bulky mass of a knot that might be uncomfortable in most other applications. As far as the cores go I just make sure that the melted portion is about 1.5 inches from either end, it will have less stress put on it and there are multiple other cores sharing that stress.

What braid or weave is that?

LilYeller 04-17-2012 05:16 PM

looks like a crown sinnett. if you do it in 2 colors it looks really nice. the colors wrap around the handle, I tried that but I didnt like that it wasnt big enough to be used as a handle, had it in the rear as a handle for the kids.
