JKU brake smell issue
 
I have a JKU, the drivers side rear rotor gets hotter then the rest. I only notice it though on long trips, short jaunts around town it isn't bad. It feels hotter than the rest, but doesn't stink. However if I take it out of town it smells like shit and the rim is even hot. They are not locked, the rim spins freely.
1. What is it?
2. Do I replace the caliper or can I just clean something?
3. If I lube the slides what's a good lube?
4. Do I need to replace the rotor and pads now too? They aren't very old.

you're assuming it's the caliper that's sticking?

Jack up the rear, have someone inside, start it, have them apply the brakes then release, spin the wheel. Then have them apply the parking brake, then release it, again spin the wheel. If it spins freely each time, it's ok.
Remember, the pads are always slightly contacting the rotor, even when the brakes are not applied. This causes a normal amount of heat.

It's not okay though, as that rotor gets hotter than the others and is the only one that stinks after longer drives.

It sounds like the caliper isn't fully releasing. That's not normal. If it was functioning properly you wouldn't have the odor of brake pads burning and wouldn't have noticed any type of problem, like with the other three. Not knowing how much brake experience you have, either you or a shop can take it apart, clean and apply lube where needed. At that time the pads can be checked for wear and the rotor examined to see if it has warped or is glazed. If you don't know how to do brakes let an experienced tech check it for you.

I've had a similar problem. I heard a slight grinding. So I replaced the brake pads, and the driver's rear pad was completely destroyed. The rotor was scored. The JK's been parked. When I got home from the parts store with pads, I stood next to the wheel. It's about a 25 mile drive (my daily commute) through the country, not stop and go. I could feel the heat on my leg. And the smell was terrible. I'm hoping a new rotor will fix it for a while.

Does the BLD have something to do with how quickly these brake pads wear out?

That's why you jack it up and spin the wheel, you probably won't need to go further aside from rebuilding the caliper and make sure the slide is lubricated. And also why it's important to check the e brake, make sure it releases as I said.
Finally, buy a heat gun and get an actual temp on the rotors.

it was the caliper. It was releasing enough that the wheel spun, but it still stunk after long trips. I replaced the caliper and all is well.

so now I am having trouble with the other side. I have the jeep on jacks, both (the caliper i replaced) and the one I am having issues with now spin about the same. Some resistance. However, now it is the passenger side that I could feel the heat on the rim. While it is on jacks, I applied the brakes, and it is with some difficulty that I get them to spin freely again. Like both calipers aren't releasing. Is there someplace else I should look? The drivers side rear caliper was almost exactly a year ago, now this one. But they still seem to both not free after applying brakes.
