looks like your going to need a new housing if the shock shot all the way up

Oldguy 03-31-2012 05:03 PM

Pop your hood and take a picture of the top of the shock shaft where it is sticking into the engine compartment. Post it and we'll try to figure out what happened from that.

BrianTG 03-31-2012 06:02 PM

The cai is in the way. I'm unfortunately at work so can't take it off at the moment.

BV Jeep 03-31-2012 06:17 PM

To me it looks like you are gonna need just a new shock. The rubber bushing is missing from it. If the nut is still on you might be able to get the rubber bushing from another and put it back on. I think the rubber bushing should be under that bracket in the pic.

Yep I agree...but i would still like to see that pic from the engine compartment.

Definately. Even the top of the shock tower would help.

Oldguy 03-31-2012 07:29 PM

What I am wondering is what in the hell happened to the steel washers that hold the bushings together.

Actually, what in the hell happened to everything? There are an awful lot of pieces missing...

I should have enough spare odds and ends to put it back together again if the threads and shock tower are ok...

How about I buy new shocks for the front and provide the party favors for you helping teach me to install them Ed?

Shock tower = ?

BV Jeep 03-31-2012 08:28 PM

Top of the hoop on the left of the pic. Where the shock went through. Check inside of the black boot to see it the parts are in there.

Oldguy 03-31-2012 08:54 PM

Washers, grommets, bushings are all smaller in diameter than the shaft. If the shaft punched through everything it is going to be a mess. Hell it is a mess, period.

New shocks at this point would be a good idea. Get some Teraflex shocks from predator. they are excellent. Your lift is between three and four inches so that will be the size you need. Need to see a pic of the top of the shock tower, if that's blown you will need reconstruction before you can do the shocks.

 No party favors. Dinner at the Black Forest, steak of my choice...

BV Jeep 03-31-2012 09:00 PM

YEP gonna be a mess.

Oldguy 03-31-2012 09:08 PM

No kidding... If that hoop is blown, big, big mess. Tell you what, if it is blown, you can fix it. I don't think the steak of my choice is going to be worth it.

BV Jeep 03-31-2012 09:25 PM

Boy its gonna be interesting to see what really happened to it

Kate 03-31-2012 09:31 PM

Aw heck, if it broke through it can be welded up, squirted with a little paint and ready to roll in no time.

Oldguy 03-31-2012 09:32 PM

Man, I don't even have a clue. I look at that picture and go "you have got to be kidding", April Fools isn't till tomorrow...

BV Jeep 03-31-2012 09:49 PM

" If it ain't broke, fix it till it is"

Oldguy 03-31-2012 11:11 PM

I stopped doing that about forty years ago...

BrianTG 04-01-2012 12:23 AM

New shock should fix it, I'd replace all of em after that

Kate 04-01-2012 07:08 AM

Yup! It's broke ah-ight!

Could be worse, so just think of it as a "spontaneous upgrade"

Old Guy - I won't be far away forever, whereabouts are you?

Oldguy 04-01-2012 07:58 AM

Woodland Park, Co, just west of the Springs. Be interesting to meet you :)
