What is this and is it important?

I am looking at re-routing my air intake so it's out of the engine bay and a little higher. Basically I want to route it through the cowl and make an airbox under the cowl. After opening it up there is this vent right where I wanted to be working. It looks like it is for the heater but I'm not sure and wanted to ask the experts. Basically would it be okay to cover this up or would I be looking at some sort of catastrophic failure if I do that? Thanks for the help in advance!

This first two pics are of the plastic "scoop" that is over the vent hole, the next two are of that piece removed and the last is looking into the abyss. Thanks again!

You can close it off, but you will have no more heat or air conditioning that works. That is the intake for the blower motor. Now when you put the shroud back on, make sure you have a good seal on it or you will have water on the passenger floor when ever it rains.

Mine doesn't have the shroud and I do have water on the passenger floor and had no idea how it got there. Thanks for the advice, now to find a shroud for that. Would you happen to have a part number or know where to get one?

Eagle, your local dealership should be able to figure out the part number.

Do you guys think there would be any issues if I incorporate that into the air box I'm designing for that area? I'm thinking that if I make an access port for it in the box I'm making that it'll still work but I don't want to restrict air flow too much. Ideas?

Mine does not either. Most of the early TJ's don't have it. You might be able to adapt it, to it.

I would not. Keep it separate.
