new to me 1k$ tj

As the title states, just got one heck of a deal. 97 Wrangler; 87K on the clock. Auto; only downfall is that it has a 4 banger. Other than that im pretty stoked! My neighbor has had it sitting in his back yard for 3 years & parked it when he lost his job. He couldnt afford insurance on 2 vehicles. I just so happened to text him the other night to see if he would sell it and he he said hed take 1k....i told him SOLD!! Just pulled into my yard and gave it a bath. What does everyone think? I went and bought new oil, filter, trans filter & fluid, plugs and wires. Gonna tune it up before i turn the key- i dont want to seize it up do to a dry cylinder!

Clean Hinges

Congrats.... No rust on the hinges is an amazing thing!!! Jeep cleaned up nice!!!

MikalCarbine 04-01-2012 09:15 PM

Seems like a steal, how's the rust on the frame after it sat for so long?

jambrister 04-01-2012 09:20 PM

That's a great buy.

Stoleit97 04-01-2012 09:20 PM

zero rust on the frame, only rust is around the window frame and on the frame of the soft windows- thats why there is a rust streak down the door. im going to get some buffing compound and hopefully it will clean up.

they were wet in the last few pics so probably not lol! Thank guys im pretty stoked about it. Cant wait to get it started and run it down the road. Im sure i will have a few bugs to work out due to it sitting for so long. Its hard to find any kind of jeep running/non running for less than 2500$ around here much less one in this kind of shape.

it's sad to see that your neighbor neglected it so badly. i hope you get it up and running soon.

Leeroy Jeepkins 04-02-2012 04:05 AM

nice grab! what state do you live in? grab a flashlight and check inside the frame where the lower control arms connect to the frame.water has a tendency to accumulate there and at the same point in the rear.mine looked fine when i checked it out but a few months later i took a screwdriver and pushed it between the bracket holding the lower control arm and it went right through.i scraped and scuffed the crap out of the inside of my frame before internal frame coating it. i need to get it patched but i think i nipped it in the bud/butt(or whatever it's called) before it got worse.here's a pic. NM the audio.

lower control arm are in purple

Great job! Seriously, poke around on the frame to be sure of a good foundation. After that it is only money to an awesome project.

Blackpony04 04-02-2012 06:30 AM

Great find! And while taking care of the engine is extremely important be sure to check the brakes as well. The calipers might have seized and more importantly some brake lines might be bad. Still, for a grand you can probably drop another $5k in it and still be ahead of the game, especially since it has so little rust. Congrats! :thumb:

dabolt55 04-02-2012 06:30 AM

Stoleit97, wow dude you did great, let us know how it runs.

Fishin Cricket 04-02-2012 06:55 AM

Wow, way to rob your neighbor... Hope he locks his doors!! Wanna turn a quick profit on it?

I-Want-A-Jeep 04-02-2012 03:47 PM

Yeah... I'd throw about another $1k in it and turn it for 6...

Jonny15 04-02-2012 04:29 PM

If its in good shape i wouldnt flip it at all, you'll never find a tj that cheap that runs well anywhere else...just take it as a gift and mod the hell out of it with all the money you saved by not spending 6k on one :)

jp2611 04-02-2012 04:43 PM

Here (IMO) is the perfect way to get a Jeep that will EVENTUALLY make sense for an engine swap. Paying $1k for it you can really come out ahead of the game on the low cost side compared to most JEEPERS. I would flog those 4 squirrels for as long as they can take it, than swap motor (and tranny?) and know it is good for at least another 200K.

Great Steal!!

Stoleit97 04-02-2012 06:13 PM

Ok thanks guys!!! I have 2 cj5s in back yard that belong to my mom. One she got for the motor because it ran when parked, other has a 15yr old brand new fiberglass tub, fenders, and hood. Twy stopped working on it because they couldn't figure out how to set the body. Ever since I was old enough I have wanted a jeep so this one isn't goin ANYWHERE!! Anyways... So I'm gonna upload a video, I came home as poured some Marvel mystery oil in the cylinders pulled the plugs and let it soak. Hooked the battery up and spun the engine over just to move the fluid around so I didn't take a chance on anything bad happening when starting it. Put the plugs back in and.... She's alive!!!!! Kicked over on the first turn of the ignition!!! As you can tell I'm stoked still.... As it ran I heard a squeak from the belt. Shut it to find the alternator was locked up.... Oh well... Beggars can't be chooser! I will post the video in a little bit!!!

KidRock171 04-02-2012 06:48 PM

Shouldn't have washed it. You had a pretty cool old world camo thing goin on.

Kevbz 04-02-2012 08:54 PM

no mice nests in there? thats lucky!

spark in the engine says alot is right.

Stoleit97 04-02-2012 09:08 PM

yea actually had a place where a cat made its bed. there are 2 wires on the compressor that will have to be repaired that i notice today.... heres the vid!

nothing great- i didnt want to run it too long with the squeak and since the alternator was locked up it was a good idea
