SAT easter weekend BIG BEAR (do it)

Bill and I were thinking of hitting big bear this sat(4/7). no plans yet of any specific trail. we love all of them, top of my list is dishpan springs but gold mountain is allways a good one. and holcomb creek so depending on who wants to go and capability of driver/rig we will decide wat trail. would most likely want to meet up there around 10ish.

Nice to hear from the other post that there isnt much snow on the hill and the extended forecast calls for mild weather..

MNTNGOAT 04-01-2012 10:42 PM

I'm over budget right now on gas. Plus need to see if the dealer will do my alignment as part of my maintenance -- knocked it out of alignment in Calico. So will be a long shot.

Plus, if I play Poker Saturday, the host owes me money for fixing his computer. So would be a free roll! :D

Sounds to me like you guys need a hardcore weekend, I may just have to wait on my rock rails before taking any of these runs.

Im scouring Craigslist though, for a good deal on some old Rubi Rails.. fingers crossed!

I know a guy that has them for $120 with the hardware. He's in San Bernadino. Let me know if you want his contact info.

I have the Ace rails also. Rails are critical protection. I must have slammed and slid on my rails at least half a dozen times in Calico this weekend. Cool grinding sound! :D

I would like to run from 3n34 from the Pinnacles staging area off hwy 173 in Arrowhead. It will lead us (via a very mellow but scenic trail) to Deep Creek (awesome creek) and just before that we could hit Splinters Cabin (if the trail is open) If not its a 1/2 of a mile walk. Then we could proceed on from Deep Creek through Dishpan springs (black diamond) ending up at Crab Flats and exiting to Hwy 18 in Green Valley. Thoughts?

Thats the normal way...uphill, but if its ends up just me and you we can stay in BB and save Dishpan for a bigger group. All good either way! BB has plenty of trails to choose from...

I need to get better at reading these topo maps... I have been translating what I am seeing into Google Earth, and this looks like a lot of fun. Bill, have you run Dishpan before?

mps12wrangler4x4 04-03-2012 08:39 PM

I might be interested although I'm stock and would need to be on my way home before 4pm

Yeah I have run it before, but not in a jeep. I know the area pretty well and its really nice and very scenic. Most of it is mild, but the difficult portion starts just past the cement bridge at Deep Cree and is very difficult. Like I said, Coop and I are open so if you want to come along, we can avoid this obstacle. I may have my nephew drive the Rubi and it may not be lifted enough for Dishpan. BB would be a milder option.

idk im no help cause i havnt run this but scott is stock too but has a limited slip in the rear so hes a lil more equiped and he might(SHOULD) come. id say ya as long as u have recovery points front nd rear and this isnt ur first run aka u more or less know what your doin. but since bills the only one whos done it ill refer to his judgment.

and i KNOW we can get stockers thru holcomb (cause ive done it.) so we can do that too. if more ppl wana come it might be easier to just say holcomb.

JPi1 04-03-2012 09:50 PM

Coop, I've seen stockers go thru dishpan, but not without some rock rash, some worse than others. It's kinda like the first waterfall we did at calico on Saturday, only it's steeper and about 200' long. I always go up the face of the waterfall, but the bypass isn't a cake walk either. Very fun trail. Wish I could go, but I'm too busy at the shop. Have a great time!

MNTNGOAT 04-03-2012 10:30 PM

ok so i talked to bill were goin to go with holcomb creek in big bear on saturday the 7th meeting at the BB discovery center at 930am.almost anyone is welcome to come this is not a begginger trail but stockers should be able to make it. rock rash is a deffent possibilty. (i have the proof on my jeep)
