I am very curious to learn at what time the military stopped using Jeeps so much and why, i'm just very interested to learn, i'm sure there's all kinds of reasons.

I can however see quite a lot of reason for vehicles with armor, but it just never sounded like hummers were any good either on stopping rounds, until the guys using them bolted/welded up their own makeshift stuff.

i've always felt our military vehicles wre just WOEFULLY inadequate in this, and i've never understood why. someone can say "cost" but hell, look how much a stinking hummer costs! I don't expect a vehicle to stop a .50bmg but for cripes sakes 99% of the bad guys are only shooting ak's, can't they come up with something that could at least stop that round?

and as for costs, seems to me that something smaller and lower cost would still be a very viable vehicle for areas not getting shot up, but on the news/media all i ever see is hummers. those things to me just seem like:

- overly high cost yet inadequate for protection in a battle area
so they seem to me to fail on both.
jeeps would be better when there's not gunfire,
and when there is gunfire it should be an armored vehicle of some type.
i don't see a hummer in this picture.

anyone please fill me in, i admit i'm clueless, this is just what i observe thus far.

I gotta tell you guys a little story about 4 wheelin in Military Vehicles.....
We have a local National Guard unit near by, every drill weekend they would send some of the drivers out to road test the various vehicles, Gamma-Goats, M151A2 ( Medic truck) . This was about 25 or 30 years ago. I had a couple pals that were in the guard and loved to play in the mud in the Nearby Coast Range logging areas. So one day I was working in the shop and it was raining outside, I had the big door open and I hear this awful clattering noise coming down my street, looking out the door I see it's a Medic "jeep" and to my surprise it turns into my driveway and drives right into my shop !!
Out jump two Guardsmen (pals of mine).... "Ya gotta Help us !!, we were wheelin in the "Jeep" and we twisted the front drive shaft off, we can't take it back to the motor pool this way, ya gotta take the drive shaft out !!"
So we jacked it up real quick and I yanked out the broken front shaft so it didn't make any noise...
They returned the vehicle to the motor pool ,but later there was an inspection and they got nailed for breaking the shaft !!
I just found the piece to that drive shaft a few weeks ago in the shop, I've kept em all these years.... Sorry , I just had to share that....LOL "BH"

well im not sure about why we stopped using jeeps but i believe it was actually a size factor more than anything else. as for the HMMWV (High Mobility Multi Wheeled Vehicle aka HUMVEE) i beileve that they are pretty crappy and we are actually starting to phase them out. they do have some pretty good armor for stopping rounds the proplem that we have with them is that they are completely square and boxed on the bottom. this is baaad news when you hit an IED with them. they just destroy anything inside the vehicle. the new vehicles we use (MRAP & MATV--- Mine Resistant Ambush Protected All Terrain Vehicle) actually utilize much thicker armor and also have a V-hull on the bottom to push blasts outward and protecting the occupants inside. they also utilize bullet proof plexiglass windows that are 6 full inches thick! they are actually incredibly safe now. aside from a direct hit from a +100 lb explosive the most damage you will sustain is loss of a wheel and maybe a cuncussion.

The HUMVEE was originally built as a replacement for the jeep, not as an armored vehicle. It has been redesigned and updated many times over the years and armored at the factory. They do have armor underneath. An IED is going to tear one up but the occupant survivability is good! The MRAP is more heavily armored than a HUMVEE but they are just making bigger IED's that tear them up pretty good. The MRAPS are also very heavy and get stuck in soft sand and flip over very easily, and are too big for narrow streets(urban warfare). The cost difference is immense, $250,000 for an up-armored HUMVEE vs $1,000,000 for an MRAP.
As far as you calling the HUMVEE a crappy vehicle I have to disagree with you. I have worked in the factory that builds them for fifteen years and we take pride in the vehicle we build and have a lot of testimonials from our armed forces praising our vehicle.
OK I'm done. Feel better now!!!

armygreen 04-04-2012 09:12 PM

thanks for the info fellas!!

but $250k for a humvee, this imo is a waste when a 2door or 4door jeep could handle anything where armor isn't needed,
but maybe "those days" are long gone in warfare, because in WWII you didn't have to worry that some French child was gonna blow you up or shoot you,
whereas since VietNam and conflicts since - the "bad guys" are sometimes civilians, women, children, geriatrics.

$250k though, i'm sorry that's a rip but as someone else quoted here a couple weeks ago "war is a racket". all i can say on that is - those intentionally profiteering will still leave earth and face the same judge that judges all those who gave their life in service.
