embarassing question about spare tire/rim
 
firstly, i do realize that i am violating the man code by asking this question in public . excuse me in advance ! ok...i just traded in my pickup for my first Wrangler , an 08 Unlimited X w/only 19k miles. bought from a non-Jeep dealer in far south-suburban Chicago area. it's got 4 Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ 35's on 17" chrome rims. i love the look of the tires and rims ! however the spare is the original stock (16" i think ?). so my question is , if i get a flat on the road , can i (temporarily) safely put this spare on and drive (slowly) to the nearest service station , or should i buy a matching size rim/tire ? thanx. (now i must go to the gym to do some curls, so that my testicles will hopefully re-inflate to the size they were before i asked that question).

If you absolutly have to, you could put it on to replace a front wheel. I say a front wheel because when you are not in 4wd it is an open differential so the wheels can spin at different speeds. I still however would not recomend doing this for more than LIMPING to the nearest service station.

If you got a flat in the rear, especially if it has a limited slip diff, or even without, swap the spare with one of your front tires, and put the tire from the front on the rear axel. This would also apply for people with lockers.

I would deffinatly look into getting an appropriately sized spare, or if you can't get a new tire/wheel, then just find a tire that has the same DIAMETER, so if could be used if needed.

Just playing around with a size compairison, if you had 305/60R18 tires, and your spare was still a 16" rim, you could put a 245/85R16 on it and have a nearly identical diameter. that would be if you could find one. But I would recomend getting a matching wheel and any similar sized tire. I have a stock jeep spare tire and after market tires on my jeep. It looks funny, but it gets the job done.

To return your testicles to their former manly state, buy a portable air compressor, such as this one (what I've got):

And follow that with a tire repair kit:

And then buy a fifth wheel/spare. :thumb:

I've got no spare at all. only real men run without spares because real men don't get flats. :D

Definitely learn how to plug a flat if you don't know how. The process is incredibly easy, and very rewarding the first time you fix a flat in the middle of nowhere :)

Baja mtz is a directional tire, I think. Gotta have lefts on the left and rights on the right so a full size spare may end up on the wrong side of the jeep. You can't do a 5 tire rotation cycling one out at each rotation if it's a directional tire. I'd wear down the 4 mtz's and roll with on board air and the fixin's to fix a flat. Then replace when needed with 5 non- directional tires in full rotation. Especially if the tires already have some wear, a new spare with full tread can't be rotated in with the old tires.
