Noise from under my Jeep

Hello,

This is my first time post/thread, so please bear with me.

I have a 2001 TJ 4.0l 5speed with about 144k miles. I have owned the jeep since 2008, and about a year ago my clutch went out. In January(I hope this is of relevance), my jeep was ran into in my neighborhood, actually costing $7,000 in damages. The auto shop fixed everything, even giving me a brand new front axle. So I am not sure if this would be a factor in what im dealing with.

So here is the "issue". Yesterday, at the college I commute to, I put the jeep into first gear and I heard rattling noise that came from underneath the stick shift. The Rattle noise was brief, and then a squeaking noise happened. And this has never happened, i figured that i would rev up the engine a bit, and the rattling/squeky noise was "in tune" or would match the revving of my engine. I assume, even though I am a Noob, that it would have to be clutch/transmission related.

Please throw out some ideas, or similiar experiences. If I can do it myself, it would be awesome, because im a poor college student!

I would suspect the throwout bearing.

I'm assuming that would be the transmission right? Would it be an easy fix, or is it best to leave it to a mechanic?

What did it turn out to be and how did you fix it

Other possibilities

I have seen a throwout bearing make that noise, but I personally had one of the springs break on the pressure plate (Part of the clutch assembly) and make a noise like that.

Sorry for not replying, I still haven't had it looked at. And whatever it is, being throwout bearing or the pressure plate, it most definitely has to be the transmission. As of late, I have had some issue shifting into 2nd and 3rd with some grinding, even with the clutch all the way in. I will hopefully have it looked and fixed before July ends.

Everything said so far is good advice. But if I were you, I would check underneath for one of these....

I've made arrangements Tuesday with AAA to have them take a look at it. Although I'm fairly confident it's the throwout bearing. When they tell me for sure ill update the thread.

Yup. Throwout bearing is bad. And because I neglected it for such a long time they might need to replace the input shaft. Hopefully they don't have to, but learn from my mistake.
