CJ Grille on a TJ?

Here's a 2006 Wrangler LJ and a 1983 CJ-8 Scrambler:

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/c...ndWorldCab.jpg

Fantasy question: What if it were possible to easily bolt a CJ grille onto a TJ and have the hood, fenders, tub, etc. line up right so that it looked perfect, as if the TJ came from the factory with the CJ grille?

This is a fantasy question because it doesn't work - the grille, hood, and fender sheet metal of the CJ is incompatible with the TJ and the parts don't swap.

For the moment ignore the problem of incompatible hood and fender sheet metal and imagine that magically that was solved - what if you could do the swap very easily, with just a few ordinary wrenches and things?

If you could easily swap a CJ grille onto your TJ and have it look like it came from the factory that way, would it be a cool thing to do?

Is the cowl the same? For some reason, I don't think it is. I know you could do that on a YJ but you had to lengthen the hood by ~2".

What's with the "Land Rover" style hard tops on both of them?

No, the cowl is different and incompatible between the TJ and CJ. But that's one of the things that would magically get fixed in this fantasy question.

The one on the CJ is a Jeep factory World Cab, produced for export in the mid-80's.

The one on the LJ is a custom fiberglass hardtop I built.

The CJ and TJ body have totally different proportions. I think they did a great job with the TJ grille. I am put off by the big chrome headlight rings on the later CJ's. I would go back to the military jeep look where the headlights appear essentially frame-less.
Just my 02 cents worth.

I am not a fan of switching parts between models for any car.

Thanks for the input everyone. I guess it doesn't make sense to do a build thread on this project here :)

WingingIt74 04-05-2012 05:00 PM

Oh, by all means, go for it. I wanted to do it on my YJ :)

No point in posting stuff to a thread if the population isn't interested in what I'm posting.

Putting a CJ grille on a YJ is almost a direct bolt-on, only some minor trimming necessary for steering and shock tower clearance, I'm sure you could search around and find a bunch of threads showing how to do that one. It's the TJ where none of the parts are natural fits for each other, that's what I'm planning to do.

Nope, dimensionally its the same, you do have to lower the radiator mount but thats on the frame, not the hood

WingingIt74 04-05-2012 05:08 PM

Unless your a really good body man, I wouldn't suggest it since the cowl is different. I find everything interesting and by no means let anyone pull ya down.

The cowl is the same width, but the TJ has a hump in the middle of the cowl and the CJ has a flat curve across the cowl. If you try to directly bolt a CJ hood to a TJ tub/cowl, it looks really goofy because the cowl has a hump and the hood doesn't.

I've studied every detail between the two models, and I've done a detailed design showing how every curve and body line will transition and blend (including the cowl), and I've also done a project plan that lets me accomplish what's necessary within the limits of my available tools and skills. There's no question this can be done by me in a completely "factory fit" way.

Sorry I should have clarified....he said you had change the hood 2 inches on a YJ, in which my reply was directed :)

KBR97 04-05-2012 05:17 PM

They are already similar enough, why bother.
Add some turn signals under the TJ headlights.

I think that was using the YJ fenders though, just using the CJ hood and grill.

Ibuildembig 04-05-2012 05:25 PM

Nah cant be, the frames are interchangeable with exeption of two body mounts in the back. My neighbor has a 77 CJ7 with a 94 YJ tub on it

To fit a CJ grille at the proper height on either a TJ or a YJ frame, the bottom of the CJ grille has to be trimmed slightly to clear the frame rails, and also must be trimmed to clear the steering box and power steering lines.

Ibuildembig 04-05-2012 05:33 PM

mine cleared with a 1.25 body lift and some minor minor corner massaging

When you put a CJ grill on a TJ what is it that you are driving?
